I can't find this information, where should it tell me whether I'm being shaped?

Ok, found it when I switched to the new clientzone.

It says 100% realtime speed, no shaping. But my downloads are slooooooooow, youtube is slooooooooow, torrent is sloooooooow.

Sounds like there is another issue. POst a traceroute or PM me so we can check it out. Even with shaping, youtube should be hundreds - only slow on torrents.

Hey, just noticed that I'm almost at 3,000 posts.

Whoever takes screenshot of my 3,000th post and reposts it in this thread first will be well rewarded - Afriman style ;)

Exchange looks congested there. Second hop means it's already battling before it reached our network :(

Shaped again. Why...? Tired of this.

I think we need Afrihost introduce some high cap amount packages. Like 500Gb, 1000Gb...and so on, perhaps multiples of 100Gb.

Tired of having a 10mbps line & account and not be able to use it to its fullest potential whenever I want to.

@AfriMan - Anything you guys are working on with respect to the above? Love Afrihost but hate SHAPING?

But they do....
100GB R399
and the list goes on.
Nice and unshaped too ^^

Or you can get a Business uncapped account. They're just amazing.

Afrihost's draconian throttling has been going on for about a while now; this includes evenings and after mid-night too and now weekends. This is a long weekend as well.

It is still ongoing.

Does Afrihost need more bandwidth itself?

It seems like they are capacity constrained.

How long? Granted I've been away from Afrihost for some time, but so far I can count maybe 12 hours this entire month that I've been shaped.... and during that time there was a fair bit of high-demand - almost twice as much as the average the previous 4 weeks.

How much hav you downloaded when you got shaped? I'm waiting for line activation on my 10 Mbps bundle and would like to gauge how much I could download before being shaped

Our capped accounts do go all the way to 1TB. Everything after 100GB is pretty much standard R3.99 per GB, so that an excellent rate on Capped, Unshaped data.

We're shaping a little more than we'd like for a weekend, but purely cause there is still heavy demand for bandwidth. It may be the last remnants of whatever was slamming the network over Thursday and Friday. However our shaping is there to deliver the best overall experience. If we just pushed the contention ratios up and said "Get it while you can" some people may get great service while others really suffer - or worse, everyone suffers from terrible latency and horrible throughput. I think for an Uncapped price which is pretty awesome, most would rather be shaped and still have useable, awesome internet than be throttled or suffer with an unusable connection.

Don't you agree? :)

There is no threshold or target than can prevent or guarantee when or how you will be shaped. It is completely dynamic and dependant on demand vs capacity at any point in time.

Our aim to is to shape as little (or none) at all for as long as we can. When we shape we try to affect the least amount of clients to the least extent. In times like the last two days, pretty much everyone on the network may have been shaped to some extent. But at other times in our heavy users are also unshaped for very long periods.

Don't forget that we also give you 5 Free Turbocharge sessions per month - and we offer Turbocharge topups at just R29.

Our aim is to give you as much of the network as you can handle! :)

We don't throttle, we're only shaping downloads and torrents and only on Uncapped. It's really not that were taking bandwidth away from anyway, or stockpiling it for the apocalypse. We're giving every possible GB to clients, and unfortunately some are taking a lot of bandwidth over a short period of time, causing demand to exceed our available capacity.

Remember that any Uncapped client can make us of their FREE Turbocharge sessions (we give you 5 per month) to bypass shaping if you need to. Or sign up a Free GB account or capped account, and be unshaped when you want to be.

We make all of our capacity available, we're really not trying to hold anything back. And as I've said before on this thread - we have more capacity overnight (when usage is low) that we encourage people to make use of. The only thing that should be slow are downloads and torrents - specifically because they can generally be scheduled.

That's correct. It's pretty much been proven by JINX reports and other ISP's experiences that demand all over the country and specifically in Guateng spiked extraordinarily over the last two days, and is still higher than normal. If you don't want to believe that it's iOS 7 related (though I personally do from my experience not so long ago with Mountain Lion and Windows 8) then you can pretty much form any theory you like about where the usage comes from. But it's definitely a fact.

We only shape if we have to. If we didn't have to we wouldn't - and as you mentioned we haven't for very long periods of time except maybe for the very heaviest users.

Sorry to rant on your post. Really appreciate that you see where we're coming from :)

;) No problem.
Just to show in the image below, is the average for the past twelve months. The maximum across any day before this month, was 4.1Gb/s, and only once. The average maximum is closer to 3.6GBb/s. On Thursday (not on this graph), the bandwidth peaked at 10.8Gb/s. Although totals are lower, Cinx went through the same.

That's consistent with what we've been seeing. Thanks for sharing that info :)
