It's an internet thing. Blame Telkom :p

Oh, I know it's them and I do blame them!

I do not like Telkom at all... bastardos

Excellent service from TelkomZA on here but that was it.

I know someone who was a senior employee at Telkom but even he constantly complained about their horrible service! It was no better for them... shocking, when your own employees complain about your service.

Have you tested on a capped account to compare? Video streaming was perfect for me last night. Which DNS are you using?

Using UnoTelly's CPT DNS servers, gonna give PluGG a go for a month to see if there's any difference.

Im not shaped at all,

270gigs so far.

Shaping Policy: No Shaping Applied.

Wonder if this shaping policy is per Province... (if this has been discussed before, im sorry)

Just an idea @AfriMan,

Is there a way to get Cacti graphing on your website showing live traffic so everyone can see how close the different IPCs are to congesting. That way when people are shaped, and they can actually go and see how much traffic is transmitting over the link/links, so they can see why they are shaped. #transparancy :-P

This would be fantastic if implemented. However, I do not think it will as it will cause conflict when people are getting shaped and they have a look at the graph only to see its "under" acceptable limits - not realizing it is under because people are being shaped.

@AfriMan - my question to you is this. Is the additional demand not due to the fact that you have launched the mobile data?
Or is mobile data running of a different network? Which I doubt!

I am being shaped again at 12.5%/6.25%

Don't get me wrong I love Afrihost, but as your client base grows due to additional product offerings and so on, so should your bandwidth capabilities, in order not to put existing client base in this position.

Demand for bandwidth will always grow, just like demand for electricity. LOL, not pointing fingers at any organizations such as Eskom at all.

I don't believe Shaping is the solution to the problem, but rather just an interim prevention.

They do not use the same networks - the mobile data goes directly through to MTN's network

Lol, very good point. Maybe they could have a threshold point...then when the traffic passes that point...a banner/message will pop up saying 'shaping applied'

To be fair, it's also about usage - no-one can control that. If everyone in Johannesburg decides to eat at the same restaurant at the same time on the same day, it's going to be a long time before you get your MacMuffin :(

Brilliant example - haha :P

It's something we're thinking on for the future. We're always striving to be as open and transparent to clients. However we have to weigh that up with whether that will re-assure clients or cause more panic. Sometimes too information is confusing and causes more panicked calls, rather than informing clients to the point where they can self-diagnose.

There is a strong movement within AH towards this kind of open reporting - won't name names though ;)
