What will happen if everybody on uncapped Turbocharges at once?

There is enough capacity available for this. Again, shaping is in place to avoid congestion on the network and allow realtime services to be unshaped.

They keep on telling everyone. Your useage doesn't matter, if you are a home uncapped user and the demand is too high then you gonna get klapped. Maybe should have waited a bit for this to pass. This is gonna leave a very bad taste in your mouth.. And probably a lot of new people. AfriHost might cough up a lot of "Double your Money Back's"

I know my usage should not matter and that is great for existing clients... On the other hand though my shaping on my new 10mbps line with minimal usage is WORSE than other people who downloaded a whole hell of a lot more than i did... how is that fair?

Yep, that is the question..

Hey Guys, I am planning to move over to Afrihost; also for them to manage my line.. Would you recommend? I also want to upgrade from 1Meg line to 2 Meg line,..

So if you have enough capacity for everyone to turbocharge at once (which unshapes you) then why don't you just turbocharge everybody - problem solved.

Shot in the dark here but worth a try...
Can anyone tell me how Afrihost measures, tracks and penalizes high traffic?

The reason I ask is I saw a comment on here by Afriguy stating they encourage people to download what they want\can on some thread on MyBB

Essentially the reason I ask is so I know whether to schedule my downloads to reduce my footprint and target the midnight hours to prevent from being shaped or should I just go balls to the wall? If I do just do non-stop downloads will I be penalized?

I have just moved from Mweb and this is my first day on Afrihost and I don't want to end up shaped to a point where i cannot do a thing again...

This is where I currently stand on my 1 Mb uncapped...

Generally our shaping works from the heaviest user downwards, however because of the higher demand we're seeing we've had to extend the shaping further :(

Latency of real time services bla bla bla bla

Because it isn't a permanent solution :(
Turbocharging can be done on an account to account basis, by the client if they need to unshape their account for the next hour.

So darrenford has used more data on his 1 meg line than i have on my 10meg and i am shaped for p2p to 6.5% and he has no shaping... haha... im laughing cause this pi$$e$ me off and I don't want to let rip with too much negativity...

Your customer service was great with getting me up and running but come on now!

We most certainly do encourage our clients to download what they want and how much they want - that's the point of an Uncapped account :)
Shaping works on a dynamic basis though - and will look at the overall network load and shape from there. Shaping is usually done from the top down (so the users that have consumed the most amount of data are shaped first) The shaping is also not either on or off, there are different levels for P2P and Downloads ranging from hardly to shaped to a smaller percentage of your line speed.

It's always a good idea to schedule your larger downloads for after hours, this is when the network is at it's quietest and your throughput speeds will generally be better as opposed to peak hour traffic.

Remember, Home Uncapped are the only products subjected to shaping.

I pay more than him for a faster line but im getting shaped to the point where my downloads (if i were downloading anything) would be slower than on his 1 meg line!!!!!

so what is the point of having the 10meg line? nothing! i could then just get a 1 meg... save myself a ton of money and get dstv or something... ARGH

Because maybe he is in a different part of the country and shaping is applied based on where you are and your IPC connection.

I.E CT / Durb / JHB. All three can have different shaping profiles running.

I would like a response from an afrihost representative if that is not too much to ask for.
