Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Sorry, but this is really starting to sound a bit trite. Nobody can reasonably expect you to wholly unshape home uncapped accounts on all protocols 24/7 - not for what we're paying. However I maintain that, if you need to throttle some people to less than a 5th of their line speed on HTTP downloads FOR WHATEVER REASON, you're running out of capacity in one form or another. It's indefensible.

I understand your frustration with the current shaping but the team is carefully monitoring the network and looking at ways to handle the added pressure.

I still do not get this whole we are not running out of capacity story?? How can you have enough capacity if you have to shape half of SA into the dial up ages for almost 3 weeks now, and the business uncapped product is just as ****!! Nah, i think Afrihost is going for a ball of ****!! I think I have given you enough time and money!! i even went onto the business uncapped account, just to be met with 20kb/s download speeds and 82ms pings on local servers?

I think I will give Telkom a go again. Sorry to say, but they seem much better than you guys at the moment!!

Just for my backup..

So do not tell me my exchange is buggered.. Your internet used to be awesome, but you have degraded into just another POS.

Yeah, you've been singing that tune for almost 3 weeks now; it's getting old. Simple question... ClientZone currently shows this: "50% Download/ 25% P2P". It's 21:30. Do you think that's acceptable? Do you think that's a level of service delivery I should be satisfied with?

Sorry to see that you've been having such a terrible experience on the Business Uncapped. It is a guaranteed Unshaped product. I'm sorry to see that you've come to this decision. I'd still like to chance to have a look at your account and find out what the problem could be.

That's what i hear every night and then i'm shaped 24/7...

I've had to resort to using a trial account with another isp which is not ideal!
What is the problem and why is it not being sorted out?

Not at all mate. I think it is time we show these clowns how frustrated we are. We show them with our money!!! I am taking my money elsewhere. Thought I would give them the benefit of doubt and moved onto the more expensive business uncapped account. Boy that is a load of crap!! My latency has been terrible and even though ClientZone says I am not shaped, I can't get over 100kb/s on any downlaod speed before 12am!! After that it magically goes back to normal speeds!! WTF!!!

Getting 600kbps on a 4mb account...pretty crap. Youtube...nothing over 360p plays smoothly. Average throughput of 120kBps. Not cool for a 4mb account on a unshaped realtime service...trial account from another ISP runs at 180kB - and that is because it is a 2mb trial.

And while I can understand shaping etc...it is not reasonable to expect people to have to schedule driver downloads, sdks and programming libraries for the twilight hours. These are things you need in the day when you want them.

So after 3 weeks of carefully monitoring the network and looking at alternatives, what conclusion have they come to? Can we at least get an update of the situation?

As far as I can tell, you lack capacity. That is based on the dearth of evidence you have presented to us. Instead I need to rely on my own experience and the documented experiences of many others in this thread.

Buy more IPC. Problem solved. Deja vu 2012. Or are you waiting for next financial year?

Ding dong - its 12am - magic time when shaping is eased.
Afrihost shaping does suck but its better than throttling. I think moving from ship to ship will not really pan out in the long run.
For now AH > Mweb (who i will NEVER do business with again). At least there's no throttling.
I've been off http for about 2 years now and really dont want to go back there as its more heavily dmca'd than news.
and im not here to fricken dl the whole interwebz - only a part of it :-)
And AH - there is NO FRICKEN WAY, your leader gets +250gb on a 1mb unless they r not being shaped. anything else is a lie and that is a slippery slope. just see how mwebs threads are doing on this forum. they are dying bcos they lied and used underhanded tactics. Post real dl's on your leaderboard

We had a sudden increase in demand and as a result have has to shape longer but still according to the AUP. We shape when the network is under pressure. I'm really sorry if we've let you down in anyway. We unshape where and when we can for as long as we can.

I have a rather novel question...

Given the fact that shaping as been applied non stop for the past 3 weeks to most people - granted there were improvements so +1 for that - what are the plans going forward if this trend of data use does NOT return to normal? More people will come on your network, and shaping will just be kept at crazy high levels to protect realtime but in doing that also breaking the internet experience when you are on 18.8/6.25 for 20/24 hours a day shaping level.

Your thoughts?

We've always been open and honest with our shaping policy and nothing has changed in that regard. We shape when the network is under pressure and ease shaping when network pressure eases. With the increased demand, we've unfortunately had to shape more and at times longer. We unshape as soon as we can. We are looking at a long term solution.

Thanks for the PM. We'll try find out why you're having such problems with your Business package.

We understand that there maybe some downloads that people need urgently, we hoped the Turbocharge feature would help in cases like that. I'd be happy to look at your account regarding the problems you've been having with your realtime protocols.

So, is that a 'yes' or a 'no'?

As the network grows, we'll look at growing the infrastructure or developing systems that will better manage the growing demand. Our shaping policy will not change, we'll need to shape as to not affect realtime services.

I know you don't want to hear it, but this isn't afrihost giving you these problems... It is something else.

What speed is your line actually syncing at in your router.

Also, @Type RSA - I heard of a few users having a similar issue as you with similar symptoms. Ask an Afri-Rep to check their logs for your account that you are not having random mini disconnects. These disconnects cause ping to shoot up randomly and slow speeds.
