I know it was intended as such, but it's a false reflection of reality. Your customer base isn't some collective consciousness you can hold universally responsible for the state of your network at any given time. It is your responsibility to manage the network in such a fashion that each individual maintains a usable connection regardless of what the collective might be doing.

That's our intention, we feel we are delivering the best experience possible, in light of what clients are collectively demanding in terms of bandwidth. Again, the alternative is throttling, so I'm pretty sure you would not be happy with that :(

I definitely think that we are on the right track with how we manage the network. As we grow, we'll get better and refine how we do things, and I wouldn't be surprised if others follow.

Absurd is an understatement.

I average about 4Gb per day on my 4Mbps package and that includes Netflix, Hulu and iTunes downloads for the most part. I download the odd torrent as well but I usually schedule those for between 1am and 6 am.

I actually feel like I'm using my account. I wonder how these abusers feel?

I've often asked if anyone who is on the list is here on the forums. I imagine MyBB represents the more tech savvy internet user, so there must be at least one or two out there.

What is worse? Having to throttle a couple of users who are (possibly) abusing the network with very high downloads, or having to shape quite a large number of clients? From the last 230+ pages in less than 4 weeks, I'm fairly confident that the latter is way more than the former.

I would also like some insight into the mind of these abusers... Surely they're floating around here.

I'm sure a lot of them are on here along with the Blackberry users that were downloading 100's of gigs on Vodacom's network a couple of years ago.

They won't ever admit it as they know the hatred that exists for them around these parts

I average about 6.5 gigs a day on my 1 meg uncapped account from Afrihost.

Does that qualify as an abuser ?

Also a guy that maxes out his 1 meg line 24/7 to a guy that maxes out his 4/10 meg . Would u say there on the same level as abusing ?

No, I can do 6 GB in 2 hours on my 10 mbps line, It cannot be the same level of abusing. But still, I do about 60 Gb a month with the 10 Mbps line, How do guys do over 1 TB. ridiculous...

Afriman, I see Telkom has upgraded my line to 6mb. Any chance of you guys offering a 6mb uncapped package in the near future?

A lot of these high usage users are actually WISP's that run ADSL lines and resell the bandwidth again. I feel that, instead of rolling 30 day windows or star ratings or whatever the **** you want to call implement, rather throttle the **** out of the top 10 users so that the 1 tb becomes 500gb and someone else can have the speed instead

They go with what Telkom offers in terms of line speed. There isn't a line speed of 6mb. There's only "up to" 10mbps. You fall under the "up to 10mbs" portion.

That is quite high for a 1Mbps account, that's running your line full speed for about 15 hours a day

The higher your line speed the more you pay, so yes running a 1Mbps line 24/7 is the same as running a 10Mbps line 24/7 as you would pay less than someone paying for 10Mbps.

I average about the same as you on a 10Mbps account, so in theory I run my line flat out for about 1.5 hours a day.

It could be a corporate account, or an account that is shared in a household, or is maybe used in a business or office.

We've considered all these options, and we have monitoring in place, but it really is not as simple as that :(

I thought businesses may not use the home account?

every account a household of everyone working at different time and awake t different times to have the total on for 24 hours, extremely convenient

Actually, Afrihost said this some weeks ago: "We don't offer a 6/8 Mb package because we feel the 10Mb package is priced well enough". Remember there are 6 and 8Mb packages on the Business uncapped accounts though.

Isnt this what MWEB did?
