guys remember not to download the new IOS update through itunes( new one came today) , rather do it from the device , don't want to waste that bandwidth :p

Its only 14MB through OTA - hopefully people use that instead of the 800MB one from itunes :P

I disagree. I had to turbo charge my account a few days ago, just to be able to stream something. And no, nothing else was downloading and no torrents were active.

When shaped, Youtube buffers for me, even @ 144p. This is on my 2mb line. Do a turbo charge and it streams happily @ 360p and sometimes @ 720p with minor buffering at the start.

That is pretty strange. We definitely do not shape YouTube but I do recall there was something iffy on your shaping settings when your torrents were not being shaped.

Maybe we need to look further into this. Drop me another PM please about this :(

Nope. I get full 10mbps 24/7 - but that depends where you live (I'm in Cape Town). Afrihost will only shape torrents and http downloads when the network load is heavy. Youtube and other streaming is never shaped, ever. There is no "soft cap" such as the 200GB you suggested, but when the network is under strain, you will be shaped on downloads.

Yes, well said :)

Hey Afriman, after logging a ticket in the clientzone how long does it take to get an update? I have been waiting for about a day now.

It depends on the department - but we're currently a little swamped. We've got a new batch of people in training right now, so hopefully the turnaround is going to improve a great deal shortly :(

Drop me a PM and I'll see if I can speed things up for you :)

Hey Guys

Got some great news. We have managed to get some extra capacity nationally before the Telkom network freeze over December. This is a provisional upgrade until the full additional capacity we requested becomes available. The upgrades are now live in the North, South and the East.

Please remember that this is provisional capacity. Unfortunately we were not able to get as much as we would have liked, but we're already seeing a huge improvement in the East and the South. The North is still seeing more shaping than we'd like but we expect that contention will be minimised and we also expect that we'll see more unshaping or lesser shaping happening much quicker and shaping being applied a little slower.

I am still being shaped. Had to upgrade Adobe Flash reader just now and it took 30min+. I see I am on 25% shaping for downloads and my usage is only 10GB to date.

Normal browsing (the supposed realtime services) are also crawling.
This has been going on for months now. Now there is a December freeze, meaning we will probably only see the next increment sometime in February.

I am paying more for this than what I was paying for others and getting worse service. Sorry this is not acceptable anymore.

Hi,

I will do some streaming this weekend and other testing. Afriguy also had to reset my shaping yesterday as it was stuck on 6.25%.

We need to have a serious chat with your shaper, it seems that it does not like me for some reason. :)

Sounds like this is not a shaping issue at all. Have you done any troubleshooting with our support team?

No I have not done any recent testing. Last time I went through that hoop (end of October), it wasted 2-3 days worth of productive working time and I got no real improvement out of it, just a lot of virtual 'sorry' shrugs. I work on a per-hour basis, so I dont get paid for the time I spent troubleshooting the internet. In fact it is a dead loss to me.

I am just reporting what I am seeing and experiencing. Right now it seems the browsing is back to almost acceptable and I am not downloading anything so cant comment on that. However earlier this morning speed was non-existent.

Note: I am not dead-set against testing. Just from experience, its a waste of my time with no real results, and 'Time is Money'. Got burned that way to many times.

It takes all of 5 seconds (maybe 20 if you're a slow typer) to execute a tracert...

Run one and see what the pings look like?

@Afriman

You got a pm regarding shaping in the South. Also been stuck on 18.5 / 6.25 for weeks now...and if everyone is unshaped at present... O_o

There. It actaully takes a bit more than 5 seconds, maybe a minute, to wait for the tracert to complete, and then to open the post, cut and paste and submit, but I get your point.

However I got the impression from AfriMan's post that this would rather be a 'Send us a PM and we will contact you to switch off your modem and play around with it for a while and then point the finger at Telkom' session.
