Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

No explanation yet why I should be getting 10Kb/s at 8pm at night? Is that an acceptable level of service?

Shaping in the North is still higher than what we'd like to see. Shaping is easing off quicker than what it used to, but not at ideal levels just yet.
We've already allocated provisional capacity, just waiting for the rest to be pushed up.

With respect, none of this information is really of use to me as an end user. When will it return to normal? I.e. I get speeds around my line speed. If its still going to take months, then I might as well switch.

Shaping can be expected on the account though, especially during the day. We run shaping based off the overall network load in any given region, with the North seeing the most amount of shaping at the moment.

As soon as our additional capacity is pushed live we should see a lot of the shaping queries from the North stop.

Lord of the ADSL: Shaping in the North

I understand shaping during the day. But my query specifically relates to after hours. When will the additional capacity be pushed live?

We aren't sure on dates, it will most likely be after Telkoms freeze period. We are unshaping in the late evenings.

When is that estimated to be? This is now the third time I'm asking for indicative timing.

This is plainly not true, in my case. Unless late evenings = after 1am.

The freeze period should be done by mid-Jan. I can't give you guys an ETA on when the rest of the capacity will be pushed live.
Shaping starts to ease at night and becomes fully unshaped mostly in the early hours of the morning.

Have to say as well that my speeds have been fairly consistent last few days. Full throttle thankfully.

On youtube what I've noticed is that if I refresh the video once or twice....then I will get full speeds? Really strange.

I might give your idea of using Google dns a try and see how that works for me @Zertop.

Glad to hear it's working well - though I don't see why our DNS should be giving issues - we'd be getting lots of reports like this and at the moment we're seeing great throughput all round :(

Let us know how the experiment goes :)

My speeds are still slowish. 350KBps max.

Afriman, from one of your comments in the myBB article on Afrihosts new prices you mentioned that right now Afrihost is only passing on the saving on line rental, does that mean that the prices will change again later? Because right now, according to Afrihosts site, the entry level uncapped bundle has gone up in price from R297 to R397, the speed is faster but it still is more expensive now.

Actually you can look at it the other way - the 2Mbps bundle has come down from R497 to R397. If you currently have a 1Mbps bundle you can still have it at R297 (for existing clients who are on that package). We may consider still allowing new signups for the 1Mbps data packages for a limited time - we're still looking into that. It would be for data only - not line rental.

For now I'm quite happy with my 2mb data on a 4mb line. Youtube is good enough now. I streamed the All Blacks game and the SA Cricket game together on Sunday afternoon. No buffering.

Torrents run at over 220kB/s most of the time.

So I will opt to keep my 2mb data with my 4mb line as a bundle when the e-mails are sent.

Afriman,

My line is currently with Telkom. I pay Afrihost R 397 per month for 4meg Uncapped, as commented above savings have only been passed onto line rental.

This means that Axxess(295) Openweb(295) Webafrica(339) Mweb(359) Cybersmart(335) Telkom(369) all offer a 4meg packages at less than Afrihost's R 397.

At the rate that were being shaped by Afrihost, why should I be paying the premium for being with them?

I think you will find that most of the co's, mentioned by you, also shapes and some even throttles(shivers).

AH Shaping is a lot less than a few weeks ago.

Shaping is set to ease, it's already easing earlier during the late evening/ early morning. By no means ideal, but when the rest of our capacity is live we should see shaping ease even more for the majority of our clients.

Hope you make the best choice :)

Surely those should all be exactly the same?

This all started with the IPC issues 2 weeks ago, and the problems havnt gone away. Please guys, there must be something wrong with the uncapped account. If it were my exchange, my capped account would not run at full speed. I dont know what other tests to do :(
