Hey HowTo, unfortunately, your second hop in the traceroutes points towards exchange issues.

See, ideally, the second hop should be under 11ms at all times. Over 20 means that there is exchange congestion/issues. This exchange congestion causes dismal speeds and horrible ping :/

You are going to have to follow up with telkom about this, and see if they can get a technician out to fix the problem

Cape town pings are through the roof (on CAPPED afrihost) What's going on??????

Looks like your local Telkom Exchange is broken :-(

See, that second hop should have a max of ~15ms, however yours has 1000!
You are going to have to phone them and report a fault

Fixed it, swapped my adsl router from a netgear to an old billion and everything is ok now :)

First day on unshaped 1mbps account. Browsing speed is very good but torrents are super slow (and its not the 2 torrents fault, they decently fast on my 8TA 10GB). Mweb torrent speeds were much better on a shaped account. If it hasn't improved by end Jan I'll have to look somewhere else.

And none of this asking for account details nonsense, cant just be me.

And you sure you don;t have protocol prioritization on in the client zone?

I am also experiencing really bad downloading speeds. Everything else is great. I have no shaping applied to my account.

oh dear,

I am really regretting the move to afrihost uncapped. The capped was great - got consistent 100Kbs downloads on a 1Mb line. Since moving to uncapped i get shaped/throttled to 1Kbs for many hours of the day ....yes one very lonely Kbs. Managed to get a grand total of 5G down today before the shaping started.

When i run speed tests it looks like the line is fine...afrihost, why sell uncapped if you effectively just cap us when we use it as designed? going to consider taking this up with advertising standards, competition commission, consumer protection. very sad.

Maybe go for their unshaped business accounts if you can afford. After I fixed my "voluntary shaping" as was the issue above my 0.1kB/s went to 90kB/s...

Thanks for the advice....I had been thinking of going back to the 100G capped package but if the business uncapped works then that is a much better idea. Does anyone else have good experience with the business uncapped? BTW are sunday nights peak time for shaping?

Not trying to be rude, although I'm going to sound like I am. Don't complain about shaping on shaped uncapped. If you need the priority for downloads pay R100 extra and go for the business uncapped.

The business uncapped account performs exactly the same as the capped account. Also, shaping could be applied at any time, it all depends on the strain or the network. So you can't really confirm when you will be shaped.

That's really horrible. Looks like it may be congestion - though congestion is usually more intermittent and unpredictable unless it's very severe. Have you tested on another account? -s
