Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I am getting very sluggish http and https speeds today. I haven't been able to download at full speed on https all day (max I reached was 250kb/s, it went down to 100kb/s, now its 14kb/s). Its the first time ever that I have had an issue with my uncapped 4-meg account.

Here is a tracert I did:
Tracing route to www.google.co.za [74.125.233.95]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms router.asus.com [192.168.1.1]
2 8 ms 7 ms 7 ms 105-236-12-193-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za [105.236.12.193]
3 8 ms 15 ms 10 ms ipc-recieve-jh-3a.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.178.29]
4 9 ms 8 ms 8 ms qux-jh-dca-2.za-b.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.165.115]
5 17 ms 8 ms 8 ms jh-dca-2.za--qux-b.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.165.114]
6 9 ms 20 ms * 41.181.139.109
7 32 ms 13 ms 9 ms 72.14.194.74
8 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms 64.233.174.57
9 9 ms 10 ms 9 ms jnb01s02-in-f31.1e100.net [74.125.233.95]

As far as I can see, its not my exchange, and I don't think its MTN. So I'm not sure what is going on.

Pretty strange . Your traces look pretty decent so that not latency issue. Are you showing slow throughput on Speedtest or Bitmeter. Or connect to the Telkom Guest account to see what throughput you have on saix.net

I ran 2 tests on Speedtest. One to MTN network, and the other to an overseas. Here are the results:

It looks pretty good to me. Unfortunately my http secure speed is still struggling. Maybe its something on the server side. I will have to drive out tomorrow morning and check it out.

@AfriMan

Need some info. This was send to me by e-mail. I'm currently on 4Mbps Uncapped account.
Please test with the free 1GB account
Username: Unknown
Password: pf2tc3ddd123

I'm not a happy camper with the 4Mbps account. Big speed tests difference with the current account running day to day.
He also mentioned something about IPC issues.
That is why a test account was given to me to try out. It seems Capped account works better.

Now the question I want to move from the Uncapped account to a Capped account.
What are the penalties. I don't want to be penalised. I joined the 1st of December.:)

I understand and accept that, but http secure (https) is going really slowly as well. Afrihost hasn't ever shaped that port (443) before. Unless they have decided to changed their policy on that.

Okay, you'll have to speak to AfriMan/Afriguy/Afrigirl :)

Hi,

Im guessing you will have to unbundle your current package and cancel your uncapped account (set it to cancel on the 31st). After that - you should sign up for a capped account and set it to start on Jan 1st. Then on the first, you will just have to swap out the uncapped username with the capped one.

@Zertop
No 30 days notice.
As long as I do it before 25th of the month.
Otherwise I get billed for the 4Mbps Uncapped account.
Need to get billed for the Capped account XXGig.

If you cancel now, you can set it to expire at the end of the month. Or you could cancel later on, but I don't think it will make that much of a difference

2:38 am
No Shapping applied,
Tried turbo boost
same

My p2p wouldn't exceed 12kB/s on a 4meg line.

Morning Guys

Before I post any replies (which I will do), let's take a moment of silence for Madiba. I'm sure many of us would not be where we are or have what we have if it wasn't for our greatest citizen.

Let's never forget his sacrifice and his message :)

We are experiencing a high demand on our Northern (Gauteng) IPC - which has caused us to shape much more than we'd like on Uncapped non-realtime services in that region. However, we received a provisional IPC upgrade from Telkom a few weeks back and since then we're seeing generally good throughput, although shaping has improved a lot since then from what we can see and we're not seeing the contention we did previously.

It's always a good idea to test with a Free GB before changing your product. If there is a congestion problem on your local exchange or your line causing these issues, changing product won't really yield much.

Drop me a PM and we can chat more about the best options for you :)

Your line is working 100%. You are simply affected by shaping.

Shaping won't affect HTTP or HTTPS browsing - but it could affect downloads. If I missed that part sorry - but my understanding that this is a browsing issue i.e. Internet banking and browsing secure sites.

My bad. I'm not usually awake this time. :p

This month may be different with the 25th being a public holiday so I would submit any change or cancellation at least by the 23rd to be safe.

This was my usual throw my toys out forum, being on 4Mbps uncapped and expecting brilliant speeds .. and got not so great speeds I have with the help of the Afriteam moved over to 4Mps capped. Choc and cheese change, speeds that I only can dream of, no shaping ... ever. I only now visit this thread to see what other folks battle with ... pure bliss:)

Awesome to hear it :D

Same here, speeds are quite good for a change.

Thanks Afripeople and sorry for being such a pain.

I know you all do what you can to help us and we can be VERY dificult!

Speeds seem good tonight for a change, getting full speed on torrents on 10Mbps uncapped

Hi AfriMan
Send you a PM.
But speeds are horrendous you can not use this package.
I joined on the 1st of December. But have not used this account barely due to speed issues.
1KB/s download on a 4MB/s account, worse then a 56Kb/s modem.
