Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I am in the Eastern Cape but it is not a shaping thing as I get exactly the same results with my capped account. Also, I this problem has only started in the last week or so, before that all was ok.

I prefer not to use testmy.net . Not that it's not accurate or a poor service, it's just that it uses a very different methodology for testing throughput, so results compared to Ookla tests are like chalk and cheese on the same line. Also, once you submit those results to us, it's very difficult to know what we're looking at if we use different methods. So for the sake of unformity to establish a baseline, we prefer using Speedtest.net :)
 
@AfriMan: I sent you a PM on this topic almost two weeks ago, no reply. Is Afrihost going to be keeping their current uncapped pricing for the foreseeable future? In other words, will I need to pay R100 extra to get 2mbps once Telkom upgrades my line?

and yet testmy.net represents a true reflection of his download speeds when not using a download manager.

Sorry if I missed your PM. We're going to be reviewing our pricing once Telkom's upgrades are complete, which may only be around mid-Feb :(

Again, saying it's a true reflection is difficult to quantify, becuase we are essentially using different baselines. So it really does make it difficult to compare apples and oranges :(

Just an observation: ignoring any comparison of service levels, Afrihost is now the most expensive for 2mbps of all mainstream ISPs. Most have already reduced their 2mbps prices without waiting for Telkom to finish upgrades, seems like Afrihost is trying to squeeze as much out of their clients as possible.

R150 difference on the 4MB bundle between The Big M and Afrihost. About 25%~?

I have been waiting for them to lower the prices as well, but service levels might make my decision easier.

I know we aren't the cheapest at the moment, but I do firmly believe that our clients are still seeing the best value for money on our products.

If the service is better, I don't mind paying more. I don't know what other ISP has 60-day money back guarantee.

I agree to an extent, but in the 10mbps department, you're also one of the most expensive at the moment, and it really is influencing a lot of potential new customers (but also returning customers). I'd love to come back to Afrihost, but not if I can stay at TelkomInternet for R223 cheaper. That's a huge difference. I'm willing to pay more for better service, but R223 per month more? That's steep.

Once upon a time I used an ISP that charged a premium for a service that was supposedly "better" than the competitors. Not saying this is the same for Afrihost but I soon came to realize that the premium price wasn't worth it.

I have missed a bit of this conversation but I completely agree with wingnut - the speeds shown in testmynet exactly match my download speeds without a download manager and this is not just occasionally, it is very consistent. As a matter of interest, speedtest at the moment shows my download speed at 190 KB/s but I am only getting 100 kB/s without a download manager, 240 KB/s with one while testmy net shows a download speed of 95 KB/s so I would say that testmynet is by far more reflective of my line's actual real life performance than speedtest. Also, when testmynet is showing speeds of around 100 KB/s then youtube buffers on 360, but when it shows speeds of around 200 KB/s youtube is fine and I can even stream 720 without buffering.
Afrihost support have been working on this today but with no luck so far - they changed a few things and it seemed all was good but it quickly went back to problems again.
 
Used 4MB capped Afrihost for the first half of the month and Netflix was doing great. However after switching to 4MB uncapped the quality has deteriorated dramatically.

testmy.net shows massive variance (between 1mpbs and 2mbps), while speedtest.net (which I'm assuming is just local) works relatively well peaking at about 3.47mpbs.

Any suggestions on how to improve the streaming?

Hows the shaping? What DNS service are you using :)

Get a business account or go back to capped until they have their upgraded IPC.
