I've been thinking of using usenet again and I was wondering how is Afrihost's news server performance? or is it better to fork out and get a dedicated news server? what's their pricing like?

Also, what's the server details? ( I can't remember, will test it out tonight)

Server isn't bad at all. I've pulled items that were close to 200 days old. If you're not happy with the AH server I would recommend looking at Nextgen News.

Our news server is free if you are on our network. You don't need a username or password either, which makes it pretty easy :)

Still shaped 50/50 on my uncapped account and its 9 PM.... I'm sure many businesses are not operating at this time surely but demand is still so high. This is a letdown. I'm in the east region btw, something must be wrong with the shaper :(

It's been pretty busy in the east today, so we're seeing more shaping that we usually do. But there is still a lot less than other parts of the country so I expect this will improve as the evening goes on and private users start logging off.

Why is that Afriman. I haven't used much data this month as well :( Just curious what's going on. I know you guys are waiting for Telkom

I have been struggling with Afrihost support lately. They have always been good and responsive.

But,somewhere in January, when my line was downgraded from "up to 10Mbps" to "up to 4Mbps" because of limitations at my exchange, their support also accidentally downgraded my 4Mbps business package to a 50 Gb capped package. And obviously, when the new month started, I had hit the cap after 3 days. I realised the problem on Saturday when I suddenly started to get bandwitdth usage emails, and have been struggling since then to get this rectified. No luck - the support people do not respond, or claim that I requested the downgrade. Luckily I cpuld prove with emails that only the line speed downgrade was suggested and agreed.
Now, I am expected to start a new 4Mbps business uncapped account, whenever they get to my email response again... I wonder if they will refund me for the 50 Gb account that I now also accidentally paid for.

Really disappointed in Afrihost, after my many year of good service with them... AfriMan - can you restore my faith?

Remember that shaping is primarily based on demand. So regardless of anyone's usage, if there is sufficient capacity being unused, then we won't shape pretty much everyone.

Once we see that there is an overall rise in demand, we make the decision to shape, and then we decide who must be shaped. We order users from the most aggressive to least aggressive and start shaping from the top until we manage the demand on the network. So depending on where you are on that list (and what capacity versus demand is at the time) you'll be shaped or not shaped accordingly.

Hey Afriman, are there any issues in Cape Town 021 712 **** area? I'm getting all around slow speed.

I tried the Afrihost tool but got no results, I'm guessing this is an exchange issue but thought I'd check with you.

I'm pretty shocked to read this, to be honest. Sounds like we f-ed up royally here, and I sincerely apologise. There shouldn't be any need to signup new account, but I will need a little time to figure out what happened and the quickest way to get all of this fixed.

Please PM me ASAP and I'll get this sorted out for you :(

AfriMan - thanks a million - all sorted now!

That's pretty odd. NNTP should be shaped as P2P service. I know it's very different to torrents, but we classify them as the same (or we should be) :(

What you're saying is consistent with my post that you quoted.

Whenever P2P is UNSHAPED I get full speed.
When it's shaped I get 50%,25%(or whatever the case may be) of my line speed.

AfriMan, I spoke too quickly. The following email was received at 307 this morning:

"Thanks for the email.

Please note, as per your request your package has been
successfully changed to 50GB Capped DSL Data.
but then because you have already being billed on your
Business DSL package, this change will only be effective
from the 1st of March 2014.

Please do not hesitate to contact us, should your require further assistance.

Regards
Itumeleng MakuaAfrihost.com
Pure Internet Joy!"

Itumeleng had misread the emails, and had undone all your hard work from last night. I am now back on a 50gb capped account... As Itumeleng puts it: "Pure Internet Joy..."

Can you please help again?
