Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Eish. An extra 400 bucks to be able to use my line as intended? :-\

Yup got something in the pipeline... Reluctant to leave afrihost, they have been very good to me, but 30kb per sec all weekend, and being unable to log into d3 while nntp is running is not on...
 
I completely agree, I have been happy, but this ticks me off, 30gb used on a 10 mbps line, and there are guys with 2 mbps lines that have done over 100gb...shape me, why.

Most home accounts are like this. You'd need business to do both same time.

Afrihost has not been like this in the past at all.

Sure when nntp was running I'd lag a bit while playing, but now when nntp is running I can't even get into the damned game. And let's be clear, when this is happening, SABnzbd is doing 30KB/sec on my 10mb line.
 
Shaping in Cape Town's been particularly bad over the past few days. Last night was by far the worst.

I can't have been unshaped for more than 2 hours, with that period beginning at around 5am, and downloaded less than 1 GB all night.

A few minutes ago, at just past 7.30, full shaping commenced once again, torrents down to 3kB/s. Sigh.
 
Well I am very damn happy to report that my half line speed issue has been resolved. Woke up this morning and all was right as rain again. Don't know what changed...but I hope it stays that way :D
 
I'm very disappointed in Afrihost. They use to have the cheapest uncapped accounts around, but now they have the most expensive. Yes, real time services like youtube or browsing the web work well sometimes, the continuous shaping is just ridiculous!

I see that Afrihost are now resorting to shaping SSL ports now. I have brought this up before, and they have denied it, saying SSL are real time services. But I have been downloading some files for work over a local secure FTP, and the download gets slower the more shaping is applied to my account. I just checked the shaping, and it is matching up with the speed. This is very, very disappointing.

I get the impression that Afrihost really don't want you to download anything on these uncapped accounts. It has become a very expensive browsing account. Home Uncapped = second class citizen :(

I moved onto a 4mb uncapped account a week ago and out the box my DL speeds were great (max line speed) but lately it's been crawling. Newsserver stuff is still good at 300kbs but torrents are crawling at 4 - 10 kb even after hours. Before they would fly at full line speed after hours.

If you're getting full speeds or close to it on NNTP, then it would not be shaping applied to torrents and not news traffic.

Remember that torrents have a much more complex traffic flow, it depends on whether the seeder you're paired with has limited his traffic or is being throttled on his network, it also depends on whether he has the complete file or not.

Torrents will never be a good benchmark for line speed. When they working they're great, but there could be 100 reasons why they don't :(

Shaping should never affect browsing at all, so it may be another issue entirely.

What diagnostics have you run?

I don't think it's a question of being screwed up. Remember we're awaiting a pretty huge upgrade, and we've been waiting for a while. We got a small portion of it just before the end of 2013, but we ordered way more that we're told should arrive soon. No specific time for when soon is, but I will definitely let everyone know as soon as we get word.

For now we have to continue to optimise and make the most of the capacity we have. This means that Uncapped (Home) accounts will continue to be shaped unless there is extra capacity we can use to reduce shaping (which I can promise we are doing at every opportunity) :(

I did log it with the team that does our shaping, so we did also need evidence that this was a shaping problem (hence the rests I requested). It's very possible that a ticket was logged with them to review the issue on Capped and Uncapped - depending on the root cause they found.

Torrents can never be expected to be line speed, although at time they are capable. IT depends on a variety of factors that get mentioned here often. I would never use them as an accurate test for line speed :(

If you can provide me with some specific testing to demonstrate that this is due to shaping, I can escalate this to our network management team to review. Also depends if there is any P2P aspects in the packet signature, which may affect the way shaping treats the traffic.
