Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Bloody hell. Half speed hell is back. YouTube and all right too hell.

Too note...when I had full speed this morning I was unshaped. So when shaping is active I don't get full speed on streaming...

What is happening on home uncapped in the South?? :(

I ran some tests in the North and YouTube traffic should be pretty normal (in terms of traffic over overseas links). However, I'll need to get some specific tests from the South to show where the issue could be (traces, video grabs, etc) so I can push this up the chain :(

Netflix should not be affected by shaping at all - it depends on what is actually acting on your connection.

There may be artefacts from the demand on the network that intermittently crop up. From experience of previous issues when we've been struggling with contention, these issues will disappear when the new capacity arrives.

I hope the new capacity does help, my Netflix experience has been quite poor lately as well.
The best quality I get is 384p. I can usually stream at 720p.

Hulu+ however works fine (except for the ads buffering at times, which I can live with). Very strange.

I am using a paid service over SSL. The account allows up to 10Mbps and I have never had issues with them. Been using them for almost 2 years

Never have I been shaped on NNTP up until a week ago.

Experiencing the EXACT same thing. A week ago mine also went to hell only running at around 2MB speed.

Hi Afriman.

Again this morning my account showed unshaped and youtube ran as you'd expect it would.

When I get home and shaping will be active I will test again.

Something in the South changed a week ago...that's when all this started.

Same here. And I'm in the North. I think they are deliberately shaping SSL ports, and possible most real time traffic. Thats why everyone's seems to be having issues with Youtube and other realtime services.

From I can gather, Afrihost just have too many users. Since Home Uncapped is low on their totem pole, we take the brunt of the intense shaping so that Capped and Business accounts can function as intended.

Its maddening. These Uncapped accounts aren't cheap. But hopefully in the next few months, the additional IPC will help fix some of these issues.

I do think a lot of the symptoms we're seeing will disappear, but we'll always need to troubleshoot just in case there is another issue we're not seeing.

I'm not aware of any major changes with regard to shaping or how we are managing the South or any other network.

What did happen was there was a mystery outage in the Cape that we could not pin down, and since then I seem to be getting varying reports of DNS issues, and symptoms that seem to point to DNS. However it seems to be very intermittent and sometimes presents on multiple ISP accounts.

I'm still running tests with our team, but at the moment I don't really know what the issue could be - definitely nothing new was introduced on our side :(

We don't have the facility to shape by ports, it's not how the system we use works. We can only shape by packet signature. IN any case, to shape SSL would be a pretty bad idea, and we'd see pretty much everyone up in arms about this, especially after this whole heartbleed story.

I do believe the upgrade will resolve a lot of the poor experiences reported here - I'm also hoping it will be in weeks and not months :(

Something is definitely screwy.
Will do some tests tonight and post results.
Can't you just...I dunno...unplug the southern IPC...wait 30 seconds and switch it back on? :D

LOL, I may be assasinated before the 30 seconds are up. People in the South are very sensitive ;)

I seriously don't have to check clientzone to check my shaping profile. Everytime I check I'm unshaped :D

Here's hoping :)
Guess we'll just have to wait and see until after the IPC upgrade.
Any sliver of luck that Hellkom gave you a ballpark ETR for implementation?
I know that they never commit to timelines. Gotta praise the person that trains them on that aspect, cos they've really drilled that into every employee that works for them!

I haven't got anything I can share at the moment - but I know that it should be pretty soon cos we've had the order for a long time now :(

AfriMan, you didn't reply to my post, so I'll ask again. Is there something going on in PTA East?

From the above posts I'm assuming that you're shaping everyone because of capacity constraints?
