I'm sorry if I missed your post - a PM is always the best way to get my attention :(

We are shaping, though not at full, in the North. So this should generally mean that realtime services should be performing well, and we should have a mix of shaping profiles in place, depending on your usage profile and patterns. Would definitely be the case for Pretoria :(

I thought you said you only shape based on network capacity?
 
I was thinking of joining but not so sure anymore . . . .

I actually don't think ANY ISP in SA can give us (the general public) TRUE broadband - this seems to be a 1st World concept only, a pipe dream for ordinary South Africans.

The main factor is demand. That determines whether there will be shaping or not, regardless of how much data an individual uses.

However, once we decide that we need to shape, we apply shaping from the heaviest users first to the lightest users last (and unshape in the opposite direction when there is free capacity when demand decreases). We determine this from usage patterns (not just totals). So there is no threshold amount which guarantees being shaped or unshaped, it will always vary according to demand and available capacity.

Is there anything that's swaying your decision to not join us?
Our Uncapped products are truly Uncapped.

What are you needs? Maybe we can work on something together.

It's not really so much in the hands of ISPs as much as the infrastructure that we all are limited to. Overseas ISPs mostly can use shared services or lay their infrastructure for copper or fibre all the way to the home. Until we have something like that, it's going to be very difficult for anyone other than Telkom to dictate the state of broadband in SA. At the moment, mobile players are probably changing the landscape of broadband more than anyone else, and I'd like to think we're playing a pretty big part in that revolution :)

Speed tests are perfect. Full line speed. Shap shap.

Shaping is 18%/6%

Youtube performance...2mb speed. This morning when shaping was 0% I had full 4mb speed.

And here is the screenshot of the what the throughput looks like.

As you can see it's up and down and frequently goes to 0. This ONLY happens when shaping is active! Will do some tests now with google DNS used etc.

There is clearly an adverse effect on realtime when shaping is used - in the South anyway - on home uncapped.

Please help Afri Team. Again...this only started last week.

Right. Used google dns as well. Inputted Afrihosts dns manually as well. Zero difference. If this not evidence that shaping effects services (unintendedly - will give you the benefit of the doubt for now -_- :P hehe) then I don't know what is.

Flushed dns, cleared all settings, used all browsers etc.

This is very strange. I'd like to have our team take a better look into this to see if we can replicate this on our end.
Could you drop me a PM with your DSL username so I can link up all the info?

Look, put it this way, I'll have to go SOMEWHERE come 30 June, and chances are that it will most likely be you guys, but, it's just a little disheartening to read that quite a few users are complaining about the same things we suffer @ OpenWeb.

Most of my usage will come from streaming as I said before with the odd large download. I also VPN into work a lot, but that is usually fine.

My son also plays games online every weekend ( or when I allow him to :D ).

I have a 10Mbps line, but a 4MB account, so capped is going to get used up very quickly I think , especially with streaming. However, I may give that a go for a month and then see how it goes, then maybe upgrade to Uncapped if i see that it is not going to be enough bandwidth, or I'll just go straight uncapped from the get go - will see.

What happens when your Double Data deal expires - do you lose half your bandwidth ? That also puts me off capped at the moment, I don't like feeling restricted, even though I probably may not use all the bandwidth.
