Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

How is http://movieshd.co on Afrihost? They can prioritise traffic for this site, all links hosted by them.

Thanks for the site btw! So I'm watching 300. 25 minutes in and my 4mb line keeps up so I think it's fine on Afrihost so far. It doesn't max the line, but it seems the site dictates when to stream.

How is this site safe or legal?

AfriRep,

I am on the home uncapped bundle with line rental included. What needs to be done to switch to the free 1gb account and keep the line rental with you... i.e.

1. How do I unbundle the uncapped DSL and the DSL line
2. How do I cancel the uncapped DSL and move to the free 1gb account
3. How do I keep my DSL line with AfriHost

Ok, problem :wtf: Download 2.28 on a 10MB connection. Next logical action, AH Clientzone --> Test my friggin line --> failed :( --> test again --> fail again

Earlier I noticed I couldn't send posts to forums, eventhough I'm a registred user there. And internet seems to function quite speedily. WTF is wrong here?

So.....

I see that your TESTING was going on Saturday as well?
I'm done with this rubbish of being treated like a child being grounded and told when I can use MY bandwidth.
I want to come home and stream some videos. Shaped until 10PM??? Take a hike.

I was shaped on Saturday. I did not bother to take a screenshot and post it up here.
You guys know what you're doing and when.

I'm also done with the absolute BS that you guys try to spin about not able to support Hulu and Netflix.
How come everyone else can get this right.

I'm done with Afrihost. Placing my notice today.
Cheers.

I really don't understand what Afrihost hope to accomplish by shaping the home uncapped accounts into the ground for 18 hours a day. I understand that these accounts don't make much profit (though I'm sure its going to this month thanks to the aggressive shaping), but after reading a couple of pages of rants, it looks like clients are leaving the home uncapped in their droves. They either leave the Afrihost network, or turn to business uncapped or capped.

But surely the more people that go for the for business or capped accounts, the less bandwidth Afrihost will have to work with. What happens if they reach full capacity again? Who do they shape while they wait for more IPC? They could get even more aggressive with the home uncapped, but by that time, no one will be on it.

Really, Afrihost should go back to their dynamic shaping. Where it shapes when Afrihost's is at peak traffic, and the shaping disappears when things start to quieten down. They have using it for years, and it works well. It will keep customers happy, and they won't feel like their usage isn't being policed. And when their are bandwidth issues, you will have something to shape to help alleviate the problem.

But I know this is falling on deaf ears. I don't think its a coincidence that as soon as Afrihost announced MTN being their major shareholder, that their attitude has changed. They have started acting like the usual big companies. They use to be renowned for their client services, but now you read pages upon pages of people complaining about their support not doing their jobs properly, or just straight up denying their is a problem with their services, when 10 or 20 people confirm that their is an issue.

I have been very loyal to Afrihost, and it feels like they are changing a lot of things that made them so popular. Its all very disappointing.

Ok, so based on your feedback, what you are saying is that you have the means to test it yourself internally with your own staff who will be able to verify any performance loss with Netflix in-house, but you want to co-ordinate it with me, a paying customer who has to use his own personal time to sort out problems you should be investigating yourself?

You know you have a problem... enough people have complained about it and you didn't deny it in your post, and you have the means to test it in-house.... Yet it doesn't seem to be a top priority for you guys after literally dozens of complaints just on this thread alone. I'm actually going to film my experiences for you and post it to your facebook wall, that way these issues will be highlighted to a larger userbase, hopefully then it'll be heard by someone...

Testing in-house is only going to accomplish a certain part of demonstrating that the issue is not network specific, which I believe it is not. In order to actually resolve the problem, we need to recreate it. The quickest way to do that is to do so under the specific conditions that you are testing under. We can never recreate the conditions of your line perfectly, how local traffic is routed and assigned by the Telkom network in your area, and also which IPC you might be routing via (we can do this with MTN, but it's fairly tricky and time consuming).

The fastest route to finding a solution to what the individual client is experiencing is to troubleshoot with that individual client.

Chevron, I can concur. I get on TI speedtest to Rosebank 35Mb/s and to Captetown average of 30. Mybroadband runs about the same.....so why the F*&@ can I not stream? I have been at this for months now and I am gatvol of the promises. The its your line ...lets run some more tests.. all absolute BS. International capacity is not there period. I spend almost 2.5k a month on a service that does not work. If I had to do work for someone and give less than 100%, I will not get paid. I wish someone will come out and just say that they are over subscribed and cannot rectify the issue.

Our international capacity is definitely not saturated. Was testing over the weekend and could stream 720p HD streams over a 4Mbps Uncapped (shaped at maximum) with very little or no buffering. On a capped account I was able to max my line out on torrent and NNTP (not always on a single download, but stacking multiple downloads to completely saturate my line).

I really do not believe that there is a problem with international throughput, all my test are showing good throughput and latency.

If it were a good portion of time, it would have been fine, but it is not. P2P shaping I get, but direct downloads. I am an opensource enthusiast and developer, and I download a new linux distro weekly, but now it takes me 6 hours for a 1.5 Gb iso, on a 10 mbps line. Any time I try.

We'd love to be able to exclude direct downloads, but the problem is that more people try to disguise P2P traffic as HTTP and HTTPS and that places a lot of strain on the network. Remember that it's not just the bandwidth that P2P consumes (which even with maximum shaping is still probably the biggest bandwidth consumer) but also the number of threads across the network established that places additional strain on resources. We are always looking at other ways of doing this, but right now we're using a proven method used by US and EU ISP's.

hmm tested a buddy's vpn service tonight, and the joy that they shape a vpn service... sigh

* note only way to fix p2p issues with games like wildstar and diablo is getting a vpn solution like hot spot shield, proper paid services like that by pass any shaping due to the intense tunneling and encapsulation of packets. but who wants to pay R899 for uncapped and then $10 + a month just to be able to play your games that cost $60+ .... #lifeofonlinegamers

VPN should not be shaped as a realtime service. I think you are chatting to AfriGuy regarding this particular gaming service. We need to establish if the traffic is being shaped in realtime and whether it is a service which is being mis-classified. If so, we can try to figure out if we can re-classify the traffic.

Just throwing in my two cents here... I'm a long-time 10mbps uncapped user, and have generally been very happy with the service. Over the last week, I've noticed that my http downloads max out at about 200kB/sec. I'm used to 1MB/sec. I admit I haven't kept track of exactly when I've tried, but I know that it has been at various times throughout the day. I'm currently working on porting an Android ROM to my tablet, so I'm building the ROM on my overseas server multiple times a day and downloading the 220MB file each time (port 80). Every time I've checked the Clientzone, it says "Shaping Policy: 12.5% Download/ 6.25% P2P". Again, this is something I'm not used to seeing regularly from Afrihost; in the past, I'd only notice the shaping policy enforced during peak times of the day.

And so I arrived here to see if anyone else is experiencing the same, and the news is not good! AfriMan, your comments are particularly concerning to me. I was under the impression that Afrihost's shaping was dynamic 24/7. Are you telling me that between 07h30 and 22h00, I am to expect no more than 2mbps from my 10mbps account due to the fact that your shaping policy is manually enforced?! For me, that is just unacceptable and quite frankly, extremely misleading. I'd definitely like some clarity on that please!

We are shaping Uncapped accounts to the maximum extent for the moment. I initially thought this was going to be for a few days, but our management have decided to extend this testing to see how we can improve the experience of our clients, ensuring excellent realtime service and maintaing throughput and latency for those services to perform at peak. So far, our testing shows that realtime is performing well, and this also means that clients using turbocharge can get an excellent unshaped experience when they need it.

I'm not sure how long we'll continue testing, I think we're still collecting data and feedback to assess whether we should make changes to our AUP and to what extent we will decide to change our current policy. For now, we'll continue to shape at max between 7:30am and 10pm and then shape dynamically between 10pm and 7:30am, to allow clients to get back the maximum available data after peak and overnight.
