Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

The recent responses from the Afripeeps feels very much like a corporate, we do not care about individual clients anymore, so a couple of us moaning won't change much. I think they have now gone to that level.

I'm sorry you feel that way, I promise we are not going according to a corporate script or answering dispassionately towards clients. I think I can speak for all the Afripeeps to say that we genuinely care, and we spend a lot of time behind the scenes testing and trying to find evidence to get these issues taken further, especially when we see multiple complaints of a similar nature. However, if we can't replicate that problem on our side, then we need to work together to identify where that problem could be originating from to the best of our ability. Not always an easy task, that's why we need your help and forums like this are so very important to help us improve all our clients experience.

afriman did you get my pm? no response

and here is proof...going well for the first couple of days them after that you can clearly see i am being throttled

as i sit here i am getting 10kbs dl max!

I don't think you PM'd me, perhaps it went to AfriGuy. Could you please forward that to me, or email me on [email protected]?

Going to cancel my 20Mb account and move my line away from Afrihost as well. I am not wasting any more money with this ISP and their silly tests.

Sorry, but I'm calling BS here.

How is it possible I can stream at 1080p with Mweb and Web Africa, but not with Afrihost.
That has got zero do with not supporting a DNS provider and the fact that it geographically locked.

You guys need to get your international bandwidth sorted, or identify your traffic properly.
Either way, it's Afrihost's mess up, no one else.

I was able to stream on YouTube on a 4Mbps account (shaped) on 720p. I was also able to stream at full HD 1080p on a Capped account without any problems. I don't believe there is an issue with our network throughput and latency at the moment. This was on YouTube using our DNS.

AfriRep,

I am on the home uncapped bundle with line rental included. What needs to be done to switch to the free 1gb account and keep the line rental with you... i.e.

1. How do I unbundle the uncapped DSL and the DSL line
2. How do I cancel the uncapped DSL and move to the free 1gb account
3. How do I keep my DSL line with AfriHost

You can downgrade the DSL data part to a 1GB Free product. This should automatically unbundle you as the 1GB is not eligible to be bundled. You can then keep your line with us, and you won't be charged for the 1GB product.

Ok, problem :wtf: Download 2.28 on a 10MB connection. Next logical action, AH Clientzone --> Test my friggin line --> failed :( --> test again --> fail again

Earlier I noticed I couldn't send posts to forums, eventhough I'm a registred user there. And internet seems to function quite speedily. WTF is wrong here?

This is pretty weird. Guessing I would think it might be a DNS problem, if you were using different DNS than our automatically assigned ones. Could also be a problem on the forum site itself, if general internet is working correct. But it could really be something else if you're also having a throughput issue.

We'll definitely need to troubleshoot further :(

I'm sorry you feel this way. I truly believe that the only way we can find the solution to problems experienced is to test and troubleshoot. I honestly believe that if the issue is on our side, our team will move mountains to improve our clients experience. We can only get there if we work together :(

If you have made up your mind, I guess I can only wish you the best. If you'd like to look at what can be done to improve your experience, you are most welcome to drop me PM :(

All services and tested from a few different devices.

Even downloads are failing after about 30 seconds.....same as the streaming.

That's very interesting. Sounds like there is something that is killing throughput after 30 seconds. Could be something to do with Router QoS or perhaps a line issue there. Have you tested with a different router?

Drop me a PM so we can test further.

How can you blame poor throughout on dns?
Seriously? I'd love to hear the technical reason for this.

I really don't understand what Afrihost hope to accomplish by shaping the home uncapped accounts into the ground for 18 hours a day. I understand that these accounts don't make much profit (though I'm sure its going to this month thanks to the aggressive shaping), but after reading a couple of pages of rants, it looks like clients are leaving the home uncapped in their droves. They either leave the Afrihost network, or turn to business uncapped or capped.

But surely the more people that go for the for business or capped accounts, the less bandwidth Afrihost will have to work with. What happens if they reach capacity again? Who do they shape while they wait for more IPC? They could get even aggressive with the home uncapped, but by that time, no one will be on it.

Really, Afrihost should go back to their dynamic shaping. Where it shapes when Afrihost's is at peak traffic, and the shaping disappears when things start to quieten down. They have using it for years, and it works like a charm. It will keep customers happy, and they won't feel like their usage isn't being policed. And when their are bandwidth issues, you will have something to shape to help alleviate the problem.

But I know this is falling on deaf ears. I don't think its a coincidence that as soon as Afrihost announced MTN being their major shareholder, that their attitude has changed. They have started acting like the usual big companies. They use to be renowned for their client services, but now you read pages upon pages of people complaining about their support not doing their jobs properly, or just straight up denying their is a problem with their services, when 10 or 20 people confirm that their is an issue.

I have been very loyal to Afrihost, and it feels like they are changing a lot of things that made them so popular. Its all very disappointing.

We love the concept of dynamic shaping, but we're finding that more and more clients are using different methods to disguise traffic to pull as much bandwidth as possible without being shaped. Our aim is to deliver the very best experience we can with the resources we have in a consistent and sustainable way. Unfortunately just continually upgrading the IPC is not a realistic option, especially if we want to be able to offer better pricing in the future. The testing is to determine if there is a better way for us to guarantee a good overall internet experience for every client that is appropriate to their price point.

Your comments are definitely being heard, and I've mentioned before that our Director's and senior management ready MyBB forums regularly. In fact, even MTN read through the comments here and generally take the feedback back to their teams for their comment. So I promise that each and every comment is valuable to us and ultimately helps us be better for our clients.

If DNS servers are slow to respond, it can affect speeds - in the sense that overall experience will be degraded. Not necessarily throughput in the sense of the line's capability to transmit or receive data.

Service has been terrible this weekend, what a waste of money. Am also going to move on. Final strike Afrihost

The issue is when there is seeming insufficient intl backhaul or if you shaper causes other forms of havoc which drives people to different means to get their content like running VPN solutions with your own back end proxy cause my german throughput was piss poor on single/low thread applications for example.

Why don't you just burst users outright and set the burst durations and ratios dynamically by some ruleset? Run different ques for the P2P services and what not.

I just dont want 10% of my linespeed when downloading IOS updates or Windows updates or anything like that. When you are sitting with a 20Mb line and proper legit downloads which are only 1.5Gb are taking hours to download then you have to question the R1400 a month cost.

You are comparing a Capped account to an Uncapped account - irrelevant.

I am comparing Mweb and Web Africa UNCAPPED accounts.

EDIT: YouTube is also local traffic.
