Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I know I know I dont know how to attach a picture using the tapotalk forum thing on my fone.

But I am downloading at 211kb/s Penny Dreadful ep 7

I didnt want to start a debate just saying it is common knowledge that *uncapped across all ISPs are sh*t.

So dont het why everyone keeps complaining. Instead move to cap and they will eventually better the *uncapped products ?

If you're happy parting with your cash for sub-standard goods, you are well within your right.
But don't tell others not to complain (because it is our right) when we are not getting what we pay for.

I was unable to stream a single video from Hulu the WHOLE weekend.
Is that good value for money? Don't be blind dude.
While you're waving your poms poms around cheering for Afrihost, we are all getting shafted with MTN pushing their autocratic rubbish down the line.

As I suspected. I searched HD Trailers in Youtube. Tested the whole first page. Every single clips average bitrate @720p was lower than 2mbit which means that they would buffer fine. Once again my line went no higher than 2060kbps and they all buffered fine...because the average bitrate was low enough.


Afriman you are avoiding the point I keep on making. Let me caps for you. WHY does EVERY OTHER account I use work flawlessly AS WELL AS this account as long as it has TURBOCHARGE ENABLED.

Let me guess, Afrihost now depends on the Youtube local cache, so if it isn't cached then this happens....is Youtube really full speed or are you guys depending on the local cache? You're going say...Yes.

AMAZING! Further proof that you shape non-local youtube. I just ran 2 (TWO!) HD Trailer vids in 720p at the same time with Turbocharge on. THEY BOTH STREAMED. AMAZING. When Turbocharge ends in an hour I bet you I won't be able to do this.

Nevermind thaat I'm wasting my Turbocharge just to prove to you that Afrihost is shaping Youtube.

That kinda shows that they shape international streaming.

There is a significant user experience gap between 10mbps 600GB capped, and 10mbps uncapped running at 6% line capacity 18 hours a day.

But that's not the case. You actually get full line capacity on realtime services. Watching YouTube 720p on 4Mbps line will pretty much max out your line, so that's not really a fair comment to make.

Perhaps - but then again, downloading patches/openelec updates at 10% line speed (1mbps on a 10 meg line) is not much fun.

I can't say that the service on uncapped has always been this horrible.

As soon as MTN took over, now all of a sudden we're being shaped into the ground for 15 hours.
Buddy, do you think for a second I would have willfully bought a product which is shaped for (purportedly) 15 hours????
Afrihost's reputation as an ethical ISP has gone forever. We've being told it's from 7am - 10pm, weekdays.
I check on the weekend, and it's still shaped.
The uncapped has gone for a ball of sh*t ever since MTN took over.

You can downgrade the DSL data part to a 1GB Free product. This should automatically unbundle you as the 1GB is not eligible to be bundled. You can then keep your line with us, and you won't be charged for the 1GB product.

Do I do this in the New Client Zone or the Old Client Zone ?

This doesn't prove that we are shaping. The video that I tested, despite the bit rate, still demanded in excess of 2.5Mbps up to maximum line speed. So it's impossible to say that we're shaping YouTube if you can achieve maximum line throughput. We don't really have the means to shape locally or non-locally cached content, the only way would be naturally by contention, and we have teams constantly monitoring our overseas links to ensure they are not contended.

I understand that you have a complex issue which is not making sense but I think it's a big stretch to say we're shaping international YouTube content. I'm more than happy to test these links, on a shaped account. Once I've done this, I'll be happy to share what I find transparently.

Can't agree with you more, Afrihost's move to MTN was the worst thing they ever did for user experience

All *uncapped was good at a time. Neighbours was with Mweb last year june stuff started hitting the fan.

Other neighbour was with Web Africa last year somewhere bam stuff started going awol.

I myself was with Afrihost 4mb/s *uncapped and it was fun... Up until about September last year, then stuff got irritating.

So I realized damn... Perhaps *uncapped in our gorgeous South Africa is just a pipe dream.

So I moved over to capped... Yes it's not ideal, but atleast I have certainty x amount of cap guaranteed at x amount speed.

No grey areas.

Youtube is unshaped the same way that Diablo 3 is unshaped.
IE - supposed to be, but something's stuffed up and no-one wants to admit it.

True, I agree with you, but unfortunately my usage varies from month to month.
I use a modest amount, and then my utilization spikes when I need to download stuff.
I like the flexibility of not having to constantly meter my usage.

Also changed from AH uncapped to capped. So far its ok. The uncapped shaping was worse than when i was still on 4mb line. No on 20mb

We've seen the exact opposite, and discussed the move over to MTN many, many times
The move has allowed us to do things that weren't possible before - we have a lot of very satisfied clients.

Yea October was when I finally moved everything over to capped.

You would be able to download pretty much anything either overnight or off-peak at closer to full line speed. And downloading updates at 1Mbps during peak is still OK for a shaped product, considering you can still get full speed on realtime at all times (as opposed to being throttled to 1Mbps on all services)
