Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

The electric fence part is a question asked by Telkom to be honest...
And yes, if the Telkom box is somewhere close to the electric fence, if is possible that it will cause interference.
Of course it just points out poorly insulated Telkom's infrastructure is.

Yeah, he has one of those small Telkom boxes almost in his driveway and I have this huge telkom box right outside our complex right under the electric fence, why that question made no sense to me.

Aaah ok cool :)

Hi Afrihost team

We confirmed our line and exchange is capable of 20 mbps ADSL2+ from the TelkomZA rep on mybroadband(I can forward you the messages), he also informed us he can't bump up the speed directly as the line is with afrihost and we need to request this from afrihost.

We then proceeded to request this from afrihost support but they keep on saying 10mbps is the max they can't upgrade it. Now it would seem your system isn't up to date with the new speeds, who can help us or where can we escalate this to as Telkom says yes we can and afrihost says no we cant ?

Telkom people have access to a system which they can make direct changes on. We use a portal that, if not updated, will restrict us from making certain upgrades. I would imagine that the Distrbution Point restriction has not been updated on Telkom's side, which is why the upgrade is blocked.

I can try escalating this to technical to get them to remove the restriction on the system. Drop me a PM with all the details.

I had the same problem,

Telkom confirmed I could get 10mbps, but Afrihost said 1mbps was the max.

I had to move all my lines back to Telkom, upgrade to 10mbps and move the lines back to Afrihost.

Simphiwe N (08:18:45) : The line is syncing but the line is syncing on 1527 kbps and the noise levels on the line are bad hence the inconsitent sync. Your sync is on 5 dB which is bad.
Simphiwe N (08:18:55) : The signal level compared to the noise level. A value above 6 dB indicates sufficient signal strength. The higher the signal value, the better. Does the customer have an electric fence? This could cause an increased in noise levels resulting in a reduction of this value.

Serious? Going to blame the electric fence now? Sigh.

I got your PM and I will look into this.

Electrical inference and induction is definitely not something we made up. Electromagnetic interference can cause serious signal interference, ask any sound engineer about this :)

Hopefully that shouldn't be the case. As I said, they do it directly on their system, where we have to work through a portal which is sometimes out of date :(

Hi Afriman

Thanks for the reply, I have sent you a PM with the ADSL telephone number, and afrihost support ticket, I have also forwarded the communications I have received from TelkomZA confirming the exchange and loop length is capable of 20mbps ADSL 2+.

Please let me know

Yes, BUT... His exchange is down the street far from electrical fencing and there is a small Telkom box next to his driveway also about 80m from any electrical fence. Whereas my Telkom box is built into the wall right underneath the electrical fence and I have no issues at all. (Knocks on wood)

First day on new provider, the feeling of being able to browse http without being shaped is... indescribable :D
Now I know for a fact we were being shafted, & no amount of PR speak will convince me otherwise, I have joined the enlightened & the free! :D

Hi there, could you post your shaping status in the clientzone?

Not for me anymore.... cancelled Home Uncapped, now on VOX - what a difference. Only managed about 100GB on 10MB AH last month - what a joke... was being shaped at 12.5% and 6.5% from 07:00 till 02:00 every day since March. Used to do more on MWEB 4MB Uncapped (average 450GB per month with no throttling, or shaping).

How much traffic do you do a month? Maybe Capped is a better option?

If that is the case, then I would need to investigate further. If your usage is that little, you should be one of the first to be unshaped and that should happen within the first hour on most days.

You are welcome to PM if you'd like to me to help you resolve this :(

Don't worry
When I posted this issue on this forum, my intention wasn't to get help from Afrihost as any attempt is completely futile.
My intention was to inform any who is thinking about going with Afrihost that it's probably not a good idea. You people don't have a shaping policy as you shape all the time. I've been shaped non-stop for almost 2 weeks now.

Seriously, have you people even bothered to REALLY look into the plethora of complaints that's been coming through? Have a good, thorough look at this thread, it's SHOCKING to say the least.

I'll be changing IPS's.

Cheers

Between 150 and 250GB a month, depending on if I needed to download games from Steam / Origin or had to format systems, etc. I don't want to go back to capped as my data usage per month isn't constant so I'd need to look to the high end of monthly usage. And with no roll over data, I'd feel like I was throwing away money if I didn't use all of my CAP.

At this rate I'd have to try going over to a different ISP for uncapped, but I've been with OW, MWEB, Telkom and now Afrihost. So far the best service was from Mweb, until they started with their throttling system. And from when I signed up with Afrihost, I've only had about 3 months of joy. The rest were hit with Capacity issues and now this so called "TESTING" that has been going on for more than a month.

This system of shaping all your customers from 8 to 12 is not acceptable.

Shaping has been extremely harsh this weekend.

12.5 and 6.25 % for the majority of the weekend, even past 2am on friday night -_-.
