looks like shaping kicks in a 9am now. Though i did notice streaming last night was horrid at around 7pm

If you're in the South shaping kicks in a little later than in the North and East and eases off a little later as well. We adjust according to the usage in the region to be as effective as possible.

Thanks for the info.

Honestly, I'd feel better if Afrihost DID amend their website and basically "come clean" about what it is they are doing. As I said, most of the time, I don't notice the shaping, so I'm probably not going to jump ship just yet. But if I DID leave, it would be purely on principal. What they are doing now is immoral in my opinion. If you cannot achieve your line speed at ANY point during the hours of 7am -> 10pm, then Afrihost should not be selling the product as such. Basically what we have here are after-hours accounts, not so?

Like I said before, the only guys that know about this are the people reading this forum, and for the most part, those are the guys that I believe this "network test" is designed to chase away. Like AfriMan says, there is no "mass exodus" of users, and I believe it is purely because 90% of their customers are blissfully unaware that they are not getting what they are paying for. If more people knew that their 10mbps accounts were essentially 2mbps accounts for all but the wee hours of the morning, I'm pretty sure there WOULD be a lot more people jumping ship on principal alone. That's just my two cents. I'm going to do my bit to spread the word about it until Afrihost come clean, or end this "network test".

I don't believe that the aim is to deceive or chase people away. For the moment we're testing and no permanent changes have been made to our AUP. We're constantly making small adjustments to improve experience to determine if this is a move in the right direction. If we do make a permanent change, then we will definitely reflect this in our AUP.

Nobody has a degraded account. Anyone can achieve full line speed on realtime services, which is still in keeping with the product offering. Whether shaped by demand or according to a schedule, the performance of a shaped account is still according the realtime and non-realtime policies that have always applied.

With all this "testing" rubbish coming from the reps, surely you are closing in on what you perceive the best way forward will be. That means the current state of affairs is 90% or whatever close to what it will be going forward. And as such people can expect this to become the norm and should leave now and AH should stop stalling and wasting people's time by not telling them the truth.

Hi Afriman any indication when afrihost will start to offer 6mb and 8mb accounts?

When we are ready to commit to a new policy, we will definitely make that known on our literature.

For regular Uncapped, I don't think we will, as we're always going to keep our 10Mbps as cheap as possible. For now we'll probably only offer it on Business.

On 2mbps home uncapped
Do you shape: Microsoft updates
and Opera Proxy (opera turbo, opera mini used for data compression)
??
They are terribly slow.

Anything happening to the network? I cant log onto my account at all since it went down an hour or two ago.

No issues on our end.
If you're still having issues getting connected drop me a PM with your DSL username and I'll be able to check things out for you :)

@AfriMan - do you guys shape downloads all the time now and only prioritize real time services for home uncapped?

Downloads and P2P are shaped, it'll include MS updates I'm afraid :(

I understand that with limited supply you need to prioritize the network and I feel that streaming and other real time services have gotten faster but can't you add exception for things like security updates? such as anti-virus, ms update etc?

We shape non-realtime services on a standard policy between 7:30pm and 10pm (or thereabouts depending on which region you are in) and then shape dynamically thereafter. We are looking at this as a possible permanent change to our AUP but we have not yet made that final decision to change our AUP. At the moment this has allowed much better performance on realtime services and better overall throughput on the network.

If we do decide to make a permanent change to our AUP, we will inform our clients as such and amend our AUP permanently.

We do make exceptions for certain required OS updated and service packs, but it's difficult to include all updates. If we can identify by the signature that these are critical updates (which is pretty much impossible) then we would.
