Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Here's hoping your new place is supported by Telkom. I moved in January and before I moved I checked the Telkom site for ADSL support and line support. All looked good until the day I contacted Telkom and they said sorry, cant help you lol.

Oh no, that really sucks. Hard to imagine there are still areas where you can't get a Telkom line. Could you not get any service or just no ports available in your area?

Don't wanna jinx it but at the moment, even though I'm shaped, my game latency is very good. Actually 40ms less than what it has been. If something was done, brilliant, please don't break it again!

Our team are working on the network to improve shaping efficiency and traffic management so it's possible that changes were implemented last night that may have addressed whatever could be causing this. I think the best would be to get confirmation from them that their work is complete and then work with you individually to see what could be the issue (if it's not resolved by the changes they make).

Ok, will have a look tonight. Hopefully things will be better.

I know we've made a few changes and the guys were working until late last night. Sounds like good progress was made :)

now if you can look at the rest of the network being shaped 20 hours a day, then I would not worry about cancellations ;)

Yeah, still getting packet loss. When I went on teamspeak I had 75% packet loss (stopped all downloads).
After I reset my modem it was down to 0 for a couple of minutes. After dinner it was back to 35% packet loss. Resetting modem again to try and see if that will help.

We're definitely always looking at how much shaping is going on and seeing whether we can improve our clients experience. Remember that when shaping is more efficient, less people will need to be shaped (from the heaviest users downwards) in order to keep the network at optimal performance.

If resetting the modem changes the packet loss, then it may not be related to your ISP account and could be a problem on the Telkom line or router. But we should troubleshoot to confirm.

I did log a ticket with Telkom 2 weeks ago, and they gave me a test account which worked fine at the time of testing. The telkom rep said that they couldn't see anything wrong on their side and said I should try and see if you guys could find something on your side.

Resetting the modem wouldn't change anything on your ISP account, but it would reset your connection to the exchange port. So if packet loss goes away and gradually returns, that it generally a sign that it's line related. If it was on your account, the packet loss would be consistent from when you connected :(

Which test do you suggest I run next time I have packet loss? Just so I know and can get to the bottom of this issue.

An MTR is always a good place to start or ping plotter. But also check if you switch accounts whether you get packet loss after a while (like one or two hours) or whether this only occurs on Afrihost accounts.

Could you PM me a server/username/password. I'd like to test it on my PC too for a baseline. Iwas on Mumble and TS last night without a hiccup

This is pretty much localised in the South. Mates in JHB connecting to the same Mumble server I'm on have no issues. Though they are on capped and business. Other friends also on uncapped down here experiencing the same problem however. Tis the reason we moving.

Yeah well with pings and traceroutes from mine and a non-working might make it that much easier to track the problem down :)
