Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Glad to hear that you're enjoying the capped experience.

Remember that your PC will report data usage in realtime. We get our usage reports from Telkom, sometimes delayed and sometimes they squashed together covering a period. They do generally line up in the big picture, if you see a period of no activity and then sudden usage in the graphs. There's not much we can do to change that, it's always been an issue with non-realtime data accounting we get :(

Okay dokay
Wll, one thing I can say that I'm enjoying my internet since the 20th April for the first time. I just pray and hope that my Capped decision is the good move forward I made. Thanx

Chris

Sound like it's already working out for you there, Chris :)

Morning all

Nice to see a nice quiet thread today - hoping that means everyone is getting good speeds and service :)

Indeed I'm happy right now. Line was flying yesterday so I managed to grab quite a few things :)

Do Normally use about 200-300Gigs a month use to be on 8% shaping and 10% on P2P why is it suddenly this month 50%?
Shaping Policy: 50% Download/ 50% P2P

If your P2P shaping was previously at 10%, it is now a huge improvement for you when it is at 50%. The shaping % is what speed you get, not what is subtracted from line speed.

I am looking to make a move to Afrihost in all seriousness.
It appears the services are only shaped i.e. traffic prioritization takes place, not outright blanket throttling BS like a certain other ISP does during business hours.

I need to know about the shaping, how does this work? I have been using shaped services for years, and hardly every noticed them, well to be honest I have YET TO EVER complain about shaping.

Morning AfriMan.

If only your support desk was as pro-active as you.
Sorry to spoil the vibe, bad day yesterday and will continue to be as long as my service is non functional

I've already got a support manager whom is dealing with my escalation, but the damage has been done already and I'm looking to move as soon as this nonsense has been sorted.

Ref # CVA-113-91811 logged 20 April - nothing done.
Called in yesterday as international was non-existent - your agent decimated my line (line now fails to connect to the internet despite trying alternate ISP accounts and a different modem) and then other agents I spoke to start to blame my hardware. WTF. Seriously.

So yes, not very impressed with Afrihost at the moment.

in a nutshell. Afrihost prioritizes Real time services ( web browsing, gaming, streaming). these services are NEVER SHAPED regardless of your overall usage. So you get full line speed ALWAYS on these services.

your services such as NTTP, downloads and P2P are shaped during business working hours and is unshaped after hours ( off peak) The problem most users are complaining about right now is that NTTP, P2P and Downloads are unshaped quite late. ( say 11-12pm)

Well that would be really ideal for me.

I do not use NNTP, my downloads are mainly HTTP ones i.e. software updates, and p2p, which I do after hours anyway. When I was last with MWEB, the unshaping took place anywhere from 10:30pm to sometimes 1:30am so that would be fine.

Remember that shaping is applied in realtime based on realtime demand. It's not worked out on a threshold or on a fixed 'punitive' basis. We only shape where we need to in order to protect the network. If we don't need to shape, at any time, then we wont (or will to a much lesser extent)

We shape according the demand on the network at any given, versus the available capacity we have to satisfy demand. If there is no need to shape, we allow clients to remain unshaped, regardless of time and their individual usage. If demand exceeds capacity then we start shaping from the heaviest users (based on usage profile) until we balance demand and capacity. We only shape further if demand increases. If it decreases, we'll also shape less.

Sorry this didn't go as it should have. To be fair though, sometimes a line is just hanging on by a thread, a port reset or adjustment is that last nail in the coffin that kills the line. This has happened to me a few times, there's no way to know that a line will actually resync the way it should sometimes - so I try to warn clients that this could happen at times.

Is a manager still dealing with this for you? PM me if not :(

Speedtest is seen as a "realtime" service, so is not supposed to be subjected to shaping.

NO, speedtest shouldn't be shaped. But also remember that you're testing an international server here, so speeds are never going to be good as local. Throughput is probably not as good as it could be, but I think it's still OK. Latency to the EU is also a little high, but workable and within range for gaming or streaming.

Hi AfriMan,

Just sent you a PM.
Seriously, I'm done with AH after this.

Shocking service [not from your team, but the call centre], you're about the most helpful department of Afrihost.

I am back to normal line speeds again. Telkom fixed their issues. 10 ms average to exchange. And speedvis flying.
