Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Hi AfriMan,

Just sent you a PM.
Seriously, I'm done with AH after this.

Shocking service [not from your team, but the call centre], you're about the most helpful department of Afrihost.

Glad we managed to get this all sorted out now :)

NO, speedtest shouldn't be shaped. But also remember that you're testing an international server here, so speeds are never going to be good as local. Throughput is probably not as good as it could be, but I think it's still OK. Latency to the EU is also a little high, but workable and within range for gaming or streaming.

Read my comment again. I was agreeing with you saying speedtest isn't shaped as it's considered "realtime".

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P

@Afriguy, I just signed up for nextgennews. I am currently using port 443 SSL. would this bypass your shaping? I am getting quite decent speeds but I shouldn't as my shaping profile is quoted above.

I'm just asking because I don't want to be the knob who bypasses your network management system.

We shape by packet signature, so it depends on the traffic being sent. Also, sometimes you start out at full speed until our shaper figures out the traffic signature and then shapes accordingly.

But thanks for being upfront about it - if we work together like this we can make sure everyone gets the most of the network :)

You guys need to get it together!

2nd day of the month and being shaped at 12% and 6.5% after downloading 2GB.... that is ridiculous. As I said before, but it was outright DENIED - not enough IPC... didnt plan correctly, and by the time you got your "partial" allocation (which was actually your full order placed last year), all the giveaways and new signups have gobbled up whatever you got.

This is really poor on ANY service provider's part... you guys need to pull finger and make restitution to ALL uncapped users for the last 3 months. All the side-stepping and half-truths have worn thin now - MAKE A PLAN AH!

Speeds have been pretty saddening today on my side. Streaming even the lowest quality on multiple sites can't even buffer without timing out or something (so that it stops buffering). Haven't downloaded at all really (its only the second anyway), but I'm pretty sure I'm under 500MB. At least web browsing isn't outright refusing to load, but I cannot do anything worthwhile with that but this.

Remember that shaping is only determined by realtime demand. Your monthly total is not really relevant - we track overall usage patterns, rather than shape by specific thresholds, and we don't reset those at the beginning of each month.

As far as I can see the network is performing pretty normally. Which region are you in?

Afriman, there is something serious going on in CT region - my line just got slower and slower and have now just grinded to a halt. Reset router makes connection but 2kb Net throughput and after about 10 min lose the connection. Started behaving like this at about 3pm

Sorry to say AfriMan, but you're not rid of me after all. **** knows why, but I decided to drop almost twice the monthly number on a 4mb business account instead. It's been performing admirably for a few days; pity that the home uncapped performed similarly a short few months ago. :(

I don't run my DSL line at anywhere near capacity for hours on end. Please use the measly few hundred bucks I'm subsidising others by towards getting vanilla uncapped back to its former glory.

Good day, i recently signed up for Afrihost 1GB everyday uncapped, and i couldn't be happier with the service I'm getting. My internet has been working perfectly until this morning my email and everything just seemed to be crawling. Did a speedtest this morning too, the ping came back normal and the download speed was 0.38 which is really low considering i cant do or access anything at the moment. Is there maybe any Afrihost/Telkom related problems in the Capetown area?

Currently on TI Uncapped, and with all the network problems of late am highly considering changing to Afrihost Uncapped Bundle (perhaps even business 4mbps). The 1GB Free I've been using as a test account runs great, though that is obviously unshaped, so it's not a great representation of what real-world performance on an uncapped account is.

I mainly use my internet for streaming YouTube videos (local) and Twitch.tv/XBMC 1Channel and IceFilms (international servers). The speedtests here look great, but that isn't a real-world test (though everyone really seems happy here...)

So, how has Afrihost been running lately? How many gigs can I use on different uncapped packages before being throttled? I do ~200GB/month, 300GB maximum. Looking for both positive and negative feedback (pros/cons)

Thanks :)

I can't comment on streaming, but AH don't throttle.
They do shape non priority (downloads) on Home uncapped account severely atm, especially if you route through the South.
Not to sure how the Eastern IPC is holding up.

The business accounts are not shaped, so maybe try that rather. It is the closest to the 1GB free account you have tested.

As stated above, there's no throttling on AH uncapped accounts. I route through the east and I must say things are looking good again. Done about 320gb last month.

Where you located?

Sounds good. I think that the 4mbps business is actually about the same cost as what we're currently paying for a 1mbps line and 4mbps data, so looking really compelling.

I am located in PMB, same as you. Great news that it's performing well. What package are you on?
How's your ping to international servers (if you play any games on EU servers)?

Thanks for the feedback, guys :)

4meg uncapped. Can't comment on international ping as I don't do much gaming.
