Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Northern Cape, not sure which that would fall under.

I assume the East. I'm in the South and I know the network is under constant stress here, and as such, is in need of more capacity. I'm not sure about the Northern Cape though, but things could be the same in the Eastern region.

The grass on the other side is a different shade of yellow I'm afraid.

@Afriman is this normal?View attachment 116686

I was away for the weekend, came home to 400mb usage and that shaping policy...I just keep getting told "Afrihost will shape when the network is under demand" etc etc. Well then the network is under constant stress because my shaping hasn't changed.

Did you move any data, or did you check in ClientZone? Your shaping policy only gets affected when you move some data.

The South is still under strain, though we are seeing that shaping is now managing contention, so real time services (as well as Capped and Business) are back to premium levels with the provisional upgrade we received.

We're awaiting an ETA on the next full upgrade from Telkom.

Last night my connection was amazing and it was unshaped as early as 8PM, did you experience lighter load last night or was I just lucky?

I ran this tool, with my afrihost account it had 1500ms+ on the ping, with the webafrica account it was 25ms

However, I played around with the modem and switched the phone line pair to use from inner to outer and now i have sub 13ms ping.

I have no idea how changeing the pair used can make a difference as its in the same cable...

I wonder if that was the issue - because the physical line would have the same effect on the network. It could be that when you reset your connection the latency went away - which would mean it was possibly an intermittent issue at the exchange :(

I'm just going to reproduce my response to email support here, would appreciate some advice:

This is a pretty bleak response, any shaping applied should not be creating lag on realtime services like gaming. However, if we are shaped at max and still not able to fully manage demand, we may see contention in the Uncapped data pool, which may not affect Capped accounts as heavily. However contention on the network is ultimately bad for all accounts. It also depends on whether there are any contributing factors on your line/exchange that will be exacerbated by latency in this respect.

Could you please drop me a PM and let's get some more thorough troubleshooting going on this :(

Sounds like there could be an issue on your line if both networks are giving similarly poor results (or intermittent results). Have you run our network test app?

Did you actually click on the speed test links before responding?

We've got a full solution in East now, so we have enough capacity to maintain a healthy balance between demand and shaping. But we'll continue to tweak and adjust to get the very best experience for clients.

Our aim to do the same for the North and South once our full upgrades are delivered.

I don't have an ETA, I really wish I did have some indication. Looking at how the East has been running since the upgrade, I think things are going to run really smoothly for a long time from then :)

Afriman, can you PLEASE add http://www.nowvideo.sx/ and http://www.novamov.com/ under your real-time server scripts/stuff? They stream as per shaping status, so when I use this real-time service I get p2p/download speeds on it. PLEASE!!!! I REALLY don't want to pay R200 a month more just to be able to watch buffer less streams on my 4mbps line. No it's not my exchange, no no one is downloading at the time, it is standard SD quality, 360p at most. Everything on my side works 100%. And yes I know neither one of those hosts are to blame as they buffer ahead of the video at the speed of a Ferrari on our works 4mbps Mweb line.

We shape by packet signature, so we should pick up a streaming service as realtime, and not P2P. It depends on whether there are any P2P elements in the traffic.

I've sent a query on to our network team to let me know if we do classify the traffic from these sites as realtime. Drop me a PM in the meantime so I can give you feedback directly.

Just wondering if anyone else had this. Last month I was billed R197 for my 2mb uncapped. This month I was billed R297. I never changed accounts. So I am bit confused and concered by the price increase.

Can you post screenshots of the 2 invoices (blanking out the confidential stuff)?

When I came home on Sunday evening, I was shaped 18.8 and 6.5% with a usage of 400mb. But now you say you can only get shaped if I move data? Your FB guy says you shape when network is under stress?

Who to believe now?

What AfriMan was asking was, was the account connected while you were away or was it off?

I'm guess it was connected and was moving miniscule amounts of data but moving data none the less, and that home uncapped is getting the short end of the stick with blanket shaping no matter who you are.

Both are correct. If you are not currently moving data on your uncapped account i.e using another ISP or modem is off/disconnected, then your ClientZone will reflect your last shaping profile. This updates when you move data again.

When network is overloaded, you can also experience shaping.
