I used no spaces or other characters in the "@afrihost.co.za" field. Tried 'sharkykzn' and 'sharkyah', both return the same error.

Can drop screens to email if this does not make sense. I can log into the client no problem, but when choosing to apply for the 1G account I get this error.

Yeah I could never understand why Telkom went this way, as normal modems can reach over 20mbps. i would have personally went with VDSL over 20mbps, oh well.

AFAIK it has to do with efficiencies in providing the backhaul bandwidth.

Hello. I am considering moving to Afrihost from MWEB. We are 4 guys (and 2 girlfriends) that have lots of streaming, downloading and gaming needs, and need it during evenings from 5 till 12 pm, and all weekends long.

We have a 4mb line and we get about 3.5mb download speed on a good day. I have to decide between the normal uncapped or business uncapped packages. How big and notable is the difference between these two packages? We average about 8 gig a day and about 25 gig on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. What we need is the best possible speeds during peak times, e.g 1.5 mb is not going to work at 7pm when I want to sit down and eat supper while watching something online while my flatmate is playing dota 2.

Currently, our MWEB uncapped account with its threshold is not worth the money, where we are technically capped at 400gig, and we would like to have a package where we can actually go over the threshold without having useless internet and have to talk to each other in real live. One month of steam specials and we have 3 days with throttled internet speeds.

It sounds like you guys are the logical alternative to our MWEB issues. Any suggestions are welcome, especially from users that have similar high demands from a 4mb line.

For your needs I would say take business. Normal can't always promise the speeds you want at the times you require. You couod try the normal out for a month though first to check.

Please can I make a formal request to RPM/MyBB to investigate why Telkom hasn't pursued this route/question?

Are there technical limitations or what, like firmware on the port cards or something, anything?

We all know that ADSL2+ supports 20mbish, so why aren't they letting it happen?

Same question with G.dmt! Telkom limit G.dmt to 4mb, while the standard allows 8mb (AFAIK), why is this?

If Mybroadband can pursue this very touchy subject, and actually get a response from the dinosaur, well, then I, and I'm sure, a lot of other people will be greatly appreciated and will sleep better at night

I realise that this request is like asking blood to be drawn from a stone, so I'm not holding my breath for anything to come from this.

I've learnt, that patience is a virtue (been waiting since 10mb announcement in 2009 for 10mb, never mind the option of 20/40mb!)

I think a lot of their modems were not ADSL 2+ compatible so a lot of clients would need to change their routers anyway, so it probably made sense to replace them with VDSL and skip the ADSL2+ phase.

G.dmt modems are capable of 8mb, yet we are only allowed 4mb!

ADSL2+ modems are allowed 20mb, and yet we're only allowed 10mb!

This is the issue being questioned, so let's leave VDSL out of this for now.

I'm playing Elder Scrolls Online and I see that Afrihost is shaping the gaming traffic.

I'm currently shaped again to 12.5% download / 6.25% P2P. Everything works fine in the game until I run into a lot of players - then my monitor shows the download of data is increasing from an average of around 15KByte/s to around 40Kbyte/s at which point the client does not receive any data anymore and I get disconnected. If I deactivate shaping with a 60min Turbo boost I see that the data download during large player engagements increases to up to 100Kbyte/s and everything is working fine.

Now I have a 10Mbit line - when P2P shaping is active with 6.25% 40Kbyte is also what I see as typical download speed for torrents (which btw should be 80Kbyte at 6.25% shaping).

Please can you check with the Network team why the normal gaming traffic for Elder Scrolls Online is detected as P2P?

Maybe a lesson learnt not to cancel all accounts with AH.

I've kept my free 1GB account since I got it, as that's a no-brainer, and actually use it for my main email address, as I slut around looking for the "best" ISP that meets my needs.

Hind-sight is always 20/20, and please don't take this comment as an attack on you, and hope you come right. Just painting a picture for other peeps of what their options are

EG: My mini-dslam only supports G.dmt, and no option in the near future to be upgraded to ADSL2+, therefore, I'm stuck on 4mb, while, the standard for G.dmt is 8mb (AFAIK)!

I'm sorry, but I don't buy the "lack of backhaul" as an excuse, as if that was the case, surely it would be a 100000000 times cheaper to upgrade the backhaul than to upgrade the actual ports or exchange itself?

That's almost certainly as AfriMan says, a business decision based on the VDSL infrastructure requirements and existing router limitations. Was probably a forward looking business decision. I can't see where Telkom benefits in the proposed scenario of rate limiting certain technology...

If you mean 17:00-0:00, then I can highly recommend connection.co.za uncapped account (or any IS reseller (not OW!)), as they are unshaped after 5pm from my experience regardless of star rating (my own experience and am sure people will back me up on this).

Yes, unfortunately these accounts use the star rating, which dictates how severe your shaping is between 8:00-17:00, and is a necessary evil, but IMHO is streaks ahead of MTN's "lucky packet network load" shaping policy.

The only draw back is that "real time" performance during 8:00-17:00 is better with MTN, but don't try download anything then!

Your d.Gmt question is probably around stability. Running close to spec would probably cause more issues that the money they'd generate.

As for vdsl I remember reading that vdsl data is cheaper to provision. It's been mentioned in the forum before. I think it's because they excluded ipc so a more direct connection.

I'm having the same issue with Path Of Exile. On 1mb uncapped and shaped to 12.5%, whenever I get near a lot of mobs or players it flatlines (doesn't receive or send information). When I was on a capped AH account last month I never had this issue, so clearly your system is seeing these games as p2p traffic. Please sort this out asap.
