Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I think some more testing will be needed here.
Do you have any mates that also have the same problem?

Every other oke on AH playing D3? :p
Maybe pop your head into the D3 RoS thread and ask?

Afrihost's home 2meg uncapped account in the east is easily the best 2meg account out there IMO.

Like I've been saying, D3 is being shaped as P2P. Someone has made an oops.

Yep been saying that in every response to my ticket...

Yet all I get in return is:
"this is not a shaping problem, since gaming is not shaped."
"does not indicate that gaming is being shaped"
"Gaming is an unshaped service on the Afrihost network."

These results are a bit odd....
Please stay in touch with our team, I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this!

I'd love to figure this out but your team seems to not really be bothered in trying to figure it out...

"Until we improve bandwidth capacity there's currently no better way to troubleshoot further"

So what do I do? keep doing the tests over and over, sending ticket after ticket of results in the hopes that someone decides to go enquire and ask a techie to double check??

EDIT:

OMG?! He got the message?!?!?!?

It is possible for a gaming signature to not be classified as gaming; but something else that then gets shaped.
We can request this be changed on the next update.

I have to say though, this can take time, & there are no guarantees it will be done, we just send the request through.
Will update you once the request has been sent through.

It's so easy to prove.
D3 works, but is laggy (there is a packet loss issue somewhere between MTN and Telia), when the line is idle
Start up P2P traffic and D3 dies a horrible death. P2P traffic is consuming 3% of line capacity. The only way an additional 3% of traffic kills the game is if the gaming is contending for that 3%. If gaming wasn't shaped it would still be happy on the other 97% of the line.

Yip, its even worse on a 1mb @ 12.5% p2p shaping (10kB/s aint gonna cut it for d3 :p)

Also, my turbocharge (from the testing) just ended and my account so happens to be on "No Shaping Applied"... lo and behold my ping is 230ms!

Whowouldathunkit?!

Edit: oh wait nevermind, back to 12.5% p2p and 1.3k ping

Take it that's your in game ping. Thing is even if D3 was shaped, your ping shouldn't be affected - just throughput. But it's really hard to say how things will manifest if the network is under heavy demand.

Yeah I'm a dev, not a network specialist so I'm not too knowledgeable on technical aspects of networks :p

Could the resulting latency be caused by a queuing delay due to the low throughput? Gonna assume a fairly complex coded game like D3 would send/receive quite alot of packets between the client/server when there's alot happening (seen the game ul/dl at 40kB/s at times)

Due to the low throughput imposed by p2p shaping (sticking with the theory that D3 is being unintentionally shaped by p2p) that alot of packet queuing happens thus delaying packets and causing high latency?

Just because 1 or even 10 packets gets though the network @ 200ms, doesn't mean the game can update the action on the screen with a single packet, D3 might need 100 packets and the other 99 are still sitting in a queue for transmission @ AH DC?

As I said, I don't know that much about the technical aspects but a bit of research tells me we're talking about latency and throughput; when there's a 3rd piece we don't speak of :p

D3 doesn't report ping in game. It reports latency. So it actually measures round trip time of game data packets. So throughout restrictions will result in increased ingame latency reported.

The provisional capacity was added a while back already, the shaping is easing up after hours.

I call B.S on that. I've gone through weekends and full nights with 6% shaping . Sometimes it will ease up for an hour or 2 in the early parts of the morning. Quite disappointing. Not against shaping but the current situation is ridiculous- especially since regular downloads are also shaped

I am forced to do any updates at work via Mweb. There it takes minutes where it will take me hours at home. I would rather be throttled after 400GB of data on a 4mbps account than to have only be able to use 160GB the entire month on a 18.5% shape. The network can only be under strain for so long, and I know Telkom is slow, but it has been months now.

Agreed... I am shaped at 12.5% and 6.5% for 20-22 hours of EVERY day (including weekends)... there was small glimmer of hope for the first 2 days after the "partial upgrade", and then back to square one. This shaping level has been like this for me in Milnerton (Cape Town) for the last 3 months. Also, so-called "real-time services" (streaming) and even SSH/FTP/SFTP are slow, too.

B.S. INDEED!

I've checked for a few clients reporting the same - most are unshaped in a way consistent with what we see on the network. For the North, at the moment, the unshaping generally starts between 11 and 12 and they are usually unshaped by 2 or 3am. We would generally aim for longer periods of less or no shaping when we get our full capacity - but I haven't seen anyone shaped 24/7 on the same policy. I've also seen a few clients only see shaping kick in as late as 9 or 10am.

I know this has been a tough time, and it sucks that we only got a small bump and now we're feeling the pinch again. I promise our technical director is pushing for the upgrade ASAP as hard as he can.

Yeah Afriman, a bit of frustration spoke last night hehe. Sorry. :)

What type of upgrade can we expect?
