Realised something the other day. Referral links eg "go.afrihost.com/####" have stopped working.

Any reason for this Afri*?

Edit: Nevermind, suddenly working

Should be working, shout if you see this again.

Hi AfriMan,

Hope you can help, I have been with Afrihost now for about 2 years, never a issue,

I have a Telkom line that always used to sync at 10Mbps down and 1Mbps down, and I would consistently get over 8.5 downloads on speedtest.net.

Since about 2 weeks ago, I have had issues with my connection,
1) Lots of CRC errors on received packets
2) SNR of 6
3) www.speedtest.net gives between 1Mbps and 5Mbps.

I logged a call with Afrihost and telkom came out and changed my line speed to 8Mbps down and got a SNR of 12 for a while.

Now on 8Mbps my SNR is down again to 6-8 and all kinds of speed issues again.

The response from Telkom is the same junk of "upto" 10Mbps, but that does not explain why it worked for 2 years perfectly and from about 2 weeks ago it does not work... something must have changed somewhere.

Can you help?
Robert

It could be due to noise on the line or degradation of copper in the area :(
Do you have a traceroute I can look at?

Thanks,

These seem mostly normal, but the spikes in latency seem all over the place, especially on the second hop via your exchange to the MTN gateway.

If it were consistent I would lean towards a line fault but this looks like intermittent exchange congestion. Reading your earlier comments though, I'm guessing it might be a poor sync issue that's causing your line to fluctuate. SNR might be dropping lower at times, causing latency or packet loss. This can be due to distance or a line fault. It's not likely that distance has changed, so I would think it's a line issue then.

Sorry for the long winded reply, I was working it out in my head as I typed the reply :)

Thanks afriguy. Was away for the week only see your response now. I will try out the capped account for now then. No more line issues.

hey guys,

I need your advice.... I'm currently on 2megs uncapped and am soon to be unemployed so I'm looking at cutting all my 'unnecessary' expenses.

How much is your capped accounts? Would only need about 50 - 75gigs p/m... is it cheaper than 2megs uncapped?

I have my line and DSL data as a bundle through Afrihost, if I just want to cancel the data part of the bundle and keep the line what do I have to do?

don't think its possible to just manage your line...

You should be able to visit the old clientzone and unbundle like that :
Then you can just cancel the DSL portion :)

Sorry to hear that you're gonna be unemployed. You can pause your data for up to 6 months, which will give you time to sort out the finance part. You can even downgrade to a free GB so that you don't need to pay for data except where you need it (on top up, etc).

On the line, I can't help, because we still have to pay to Telkom :(

Yes, we can just manage your line - though you save on line and data in a bundle. In this case, I would say keep the line with us, cos you pay a little less than Telkom already with us.

hahah, no dude, my finances aren't stuffed.. I'm still going to have DSL. I just want a capped option as it will be cheaper.

How much is your 50 gig accounts?
