I dunno if that is a paraphrase, I got lost going back about three pages on the thread.

Sounds like that statement is meant to be about peak hours. But as I said previously, you definitely have full benefit of your line at all times on Uncapped, just not on all services. You can happily max out your line on realtime services, which I have tested extensively this weekend just to prove this for myself.

and for this realtime services, 80% of us dont use it.....I tell you what, you can shape me on real time services and unshape me on the service I NEED and use.
 
I tried in ClientZone now to upgrade my account from 20Mb home uncapped to 20Mb business uncapped. 1st August.
All the options take affect 1st of August, the only one that takes affect now is "upgrading" it to the 1Gb free package.

I doubt that this is the case. Most people primarily use their internet for browsing, streaming and VoIP. I don't think a Shaped Realtime Service would be very popular at all. It definitely sounds like a shaped service is what you're looking for, from reading a few comments back. However, remember you can all run Turbocharge when you need to unshaped yourself on Uncapped, and you get 300 free turbocharge minutes (5 hours) every month, so you could also consider going Uncapped and then Turbocharging as you need it (with the occasional Turbocharge topup at R29 - number of minutes per topup depends on your line speed)

That may be a display error. Can you drop me a PM when you've done the upgrade and I'll check whether the change is in effect. If you are paying a pro-rata fee, then the changes should take effect within 24 hours.

You still missing my point of my previous post...why must i turbocharge something that I am already paying for?

work hours - 8p/dau (me more like 10, but lets go with the norm) 5 day working = 40 hours a week at 4 weeks per/month is 160hours a month. So you give us 5 hours to utilised our full speed for service that WE want.... thats 3.1%......

ok, lets take it the other way. 15hours you shaping, that leaves us with 9hours (lets forget that we need to sleep as well) a day. 9hours at 30days is 270hours + 5 hours turbocharge is 275hours. a 30day month has 720hours...thats 38% only that we have access to full speed that we pay for....

38% is a bit better, but taking into account we have to sleep, its not that great.

If you were paying for an unshaped service, I would agree. But we're talking about shaped service. Remember that it's not like throttling where your line potential is limited and you only get a fraction of throughput. You always have full use of your line for realtime services, so don't get less than your line. And non-realtime services are shaped, not blocked. You can still move a significant amount of data in a 24 hour cycle - many of our clients still do despite being shaped.

If we had a download only product, then maybe that's what you would want to go for, but there really isn't a big call for that. I think in practical terms, nobody would really want a DSL account that was only good for downloads and not general everyday internet use that's mostly realtime based.

If we believed that our clients wanted something like this, we'd definitely look into this. But I don't think in general we'd be able to market a product like this. Essentially it performs the same function as a Capped account, which you can setup as passthrough for downloading or by other means. So I don't think it will fly :(

Well, thank you for the response. Just really frustrating getting a 10th of the line speed. 50% shaping would be okay. But I am considering moving to a capped account anyway.

We're not yet saying it will be permanently using this shaping regime, but I believe it may in be in place for the time being, until our management team are satisfied that they have the right roadmap for the future of our Uncapped offering.

But if the product as is does not work for you, then sounds like Capped is a great option (especially with Double Data offers at the moment).

You mean MTN said "shape them all!"....kidding :D

indeed, testing capped already to see if I will be able to survive with a set amount, the double data thing is a very good deal.

I think Uncapped will continue to evolve and adapt, and hopefully we'll always find a way to meet our clients needs and delight them as well. I'm confident that Gian and our directors have our client's interests at heart and their aim to benefit our clients first and foremost.

MTN don't get to call the shots yet - remember the whole thing must still go before the Competitions Board. And I'm pretty sure that Gian and Co will continue making all the big decisions around here - they're just so good at it, I don't think MTN would have it any other way :)

You already have a download account. It's a called business.
 
Here I am still waiting for Youtube to work correctly. Sorry I mean for my Afrihost Uncapped account, to work correctly.
 
Its good to see that the truth has finally come out. I got a feeling that the shaping was going to be permanent, and its disappointing to say I was right.

Afrihost's uncapped offering was so much better than all other ISP's offering. Now its pretty much the same, but with the ability to stream Youtube. I don't agree with their new business strategy, so I am going to move at the end of the month.

I will definitely look at getting a cheap capped option. If I give less money to MTN.. I mean Afrihost, the better.
