Hi Afriman

Thanks for the reply, I have sent you a PM with the ADSL telephone number, and afrihost support ticket, I have also forwarded the communications I have received from TelkomZA confirming the exchange and loop length is capable of 20mbps ADSL 2+.

Please let me know

Awesome. I see I have a stack of PM's to get through from the weekend. Will do that ASAP :)

Yes, BUT... His exchange is down the street far from electrical fencing and there is a small Telkom box next to his driveway also about 80m from any electrical fence. Whereas my Telkom box is built into the wall right underneath the electrical fence and I have no issues at all. (Knocks on wood)

Like I said, this is a real issue in some cases. It depends on how the electronics are isolated and on the insulation used. It's a standard question on the Telkom fault submission form.

First day on new provider, the feeling of being able to browse http without being shaped is... indescribable :D
Now I know for a fact we were being shafted, & no amount of PR speak will convince me otherwise, I have joined the enlightened & the free! :D

All the best to you :)

Don't worry
When I posted this issue on this forum, my intention wasn't to get help from Afrihost as any attempt is completely futile.
My intention was to inform any who is thinking about going with Afrihost that it's probably not a good idea. You people don't have a shaping policy as you shape all the time. I've been shaped non-stop for almost 2 weeks now.

Seriously, have you people even bothered to REALLY look into the plethora of complaints that's been coming through? Have a good, thorough look at this thread, it's SHOCKING to say the least.

I'll be changing IPS's.

Cheers

Nobody should be shaped 24/7 unless they are an aggressively aggressive user. I am happy to investigate any client who is not seeing any shaping change at all over a 24 hour period, let alone a week or two. That should definitely not be happening, unless there is an issue with the profile or the user is very aggressive.

Between 150 and 250GB a month, depending on if I needed to download games from Steam / Origin or had to format systems, etc. I don't want to go back to capped as my data usage per month isn't constant so I'd need to look to the high end of monthly usage. And with no roll over data, I'd feel like I was throwing away money if I didn't use all of my CAP.

At this rate I'd have to try going over to a different ISP for uncapped, but I've been with OW, MWEB, Telkom and now Afrihost. So far the best service was from Mweb, until they started with their throttling system. And from when I signed up with Afrihost, I've only had about 3 months of joy. The rest were hit with Capacity issues and now this so called "TESTING" that has been going on for more than a month.

This system of shaping all your customers from 8 to 12 is not acceptable.

We shape from 7:30am to 10pm, and then we let the system dynamically unshape, based on the current demand on the system. We see a large percentage of clients is unshaped within an hour or so, with more aggressive users being unshaped later, depending on how demand increases during that off-peak period.

This is not a permanent AUP change, we are still reviewing and gathering data regarding the performance of the network and feedback from users, which this forum is part of.

I am having such bad ping to europe, no mention on your website about anything. Was working fine just over an hour ago?

This does look like it's your exchange, but I saw your post later that it went away. Just keep an eye on it, and PM me if it happens regularly :)

Shaping is not due to IPC issues at all. We are currently testing possible changes to our AUP to offer a more consistent and viable Uncapped product. You should only have been shaped from 7:30am to 10:00pm, and thereafter shaped dynamically, so you should have seen some changes off-peak and overnight.

No, they want you to upgrade to business or buy a capped account.

It's definitely not as simple as that. We do think that some users may be more suited to a Capped or Business experience, but ultimately we want to settle on an Uncapped product that offers the value and internet experience we envision. Once we have finalised that, we believe that the spectrum of products we offer, from Business Unshaped Capped Unshaped and Uncapped Shaped will cater for the needs of the average client. Especially with Uncapped always including 300 Free Turbocharge minutes, I do think it has a good experience for the majority of our Uncapped users.

Even me...who has always had a good experience can now honestly say this account has gone to hell.

From my tests it looks like a speed limitation is placed on even streaming bandwidth.

Where I used to get full 440kB on my line I now only burst to maybe 380kB with the average hitting 250kB.

Switch to capped, load same stream, flawless full speed.

Switch WA account, surprise surprise, full speed.

Traceroutes on all accounts are perfect.

Afrihost I don't know who the hell is in charge of your policies but they are destroying your reputation.

Even for what this account is now supposedly marketed at - realtime services - are not working and being limited.

And no, I'm not interested in any platitudes or possible explanations of what it could be on my side as there is nothing I've changed. Other accounts run perfect, I flush DNS and renew IP's between tests and each time it indicates that the uncapped account is being limited.

Absolutely ridiculous.

To back my post up above. Here is the proof.

Afrihost uncapped Youtube stream

WA capped - same stream

Now please explain that one to me?

Uh, oh. Time to jump ship?

I would guess that their account speed limiter is introducing it. On a 20Mb line I get a good 20Mb speed using a free or 20Mb account, but an AH 10Mb account speedtests at 9Mb. There is no reason it cannot speedtest at 10Mb on the higher speed line but it seems they are rate limiting the accounts including the ADSL overhead. Someone on a 10Mb line would never "notice" and just get told they cannot speedtest higher.

This whole situation is starting to sound a lot like the OpenWeb fiasco.
