Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I tend to agree with you.

At 5am today I checked my youtube performance and it was perfect again - BUT - I had no shaping in effect. Yesterday of course I was shaped to death due to "testing". By the way, at what point does "testing" become the status quo as it's been going on for more than a month? All this talk of continuously looking at the feedback is, in my opinion, complete rubbish.

My opinion of Afrihost has taken a solid turn for the worse...which is reflected in the ISP votes as they dropped from 1st place to 3rd.

Fix your streaming issues Afrihost. If you cannot get even that right anymore these accounts are good for nothing for 18 hours a day.

Even me...who has always had a good experience can now honestly say this account has gone to hell.

From my tests it looks like a speed limitation is placed on even streaming bandwidth.

Where I used to get full 440kB on my line I now only burst to maybe 380kB with the average hitting 250kB.

Switch to capped, load same stream, flawless full speed.

Switch WA account, surprise surprise, full speed.

Traceroutes on all accounts are perfect.

Afrihost I don't know who the hell is in charge of your policies but they are destroying your reputation.

Even for what this account is now supposedly marketed at - realtime services - are not working and being limited.

And no, I'm not interested in any platitudes or possible explanations of what it could be on my side as there is nothing I've changed. Other accounts run perfect, I flush DNS and renew IP's between tests and each time it indicates that the uncapped account is being limited.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Hi Orihalcon

Really sorry to hear about your experiences, there shouldn't be any changes on the way traffic is shaped :(
Have you chatted to our team to have some results looked into?

This is becoming the norm for most users unfortunately. That is why you are currently ISP nr3 and not nr1 in The Top ADSL ISP. Streaming has taken a back seat with the current shaper. No need to run tests, it's everywhere in this forum. There are even users that struggles with their online gaming.

I was considering going the business account route - which would be great for steam downloads etc - but they are complaining about streaming as well!

Must be a cut and paste response by now as its the same question over and over...why must your clients keep contacting the call centre to see what the problem is? AH knows what the problem is.

Correct and I dont see why one must move to a more expensive package with a company that does testing in the way AH did.

Just to let everyone know, I purchased a Web Africa account to test and compare to my Afrihost account. Same account, home uncapped 4Mbps. The experience on everything from downloads to streaming and "real time services" was vastly better in every regard on the Web Africa account in comparison to the Afrihost account. Afrihost I think you either need to get rid of the home uncapped offering or fix it, your competitors are offering a superior product at a lower cost, its becoming a no brainer

Throttling? When does that kick in? I am a 200GB to 250GB a month person.

AH's answer to the problem is:
Move to a business account - blah blah

Have a look at the Business Uncapped thread and see the problems those guys are having.
I'm not even gonna waste my time moving to Business Uncapped.

Afrihost has gone to the dogs, unfortunate, but true.

If you can keep that usage to between 00:00 and 06:00 you'll be happy. If you can't, unless you're on business, you won't be happy.

Hi guys :)

I am on a 2meg Uncapped Line. From my understanding, gaming protocols are unshaped, regardless of time of day or data usage.

Online gaming on my PS3 worked (and still works) without a hitch. No lag, no dropped connections to the servers etc. at any time of day or current HTTP/P2P profile shaping. I have since been trying to game online on my PS4 (The Last of Us: Remastered, for interest) and am getting shaped to the point where every game I find, I get kicked after about 10 seconds of being in the game. To test possible shaping, I turbocharged my account, and instantly, the game ran fine. As soon as the turbocharge ran out, the game immediately lagged and I got kicked from matches (tried this a few times for replication/verification).

Everything happens through the PSN, a funny enough, during the same time period where games are kicking me, I use the PS4 connection checking tool and I am getting a down speed of 1.7Mbps, and if I try to download a game, it downloads at full speed (when I say the same time period, I do not mean concurrently, I mean doing a single operation at that time, whether it be gaming, downloading, or checking the connection).

Could anyone help? AfriGuy?

Thank you!

My experience was very similar, netflix and YouTube was definitely affected by the shaping, switched to capped account and it's running beautifully now. See my conversation with AfriMan a couple of pages back.

AfriMan - The reason people like me and Orihalcon are getting irritated is because we keep on getting the same response that issues need to be looked at on a per user basis but the sheer volume of complaints surely point to something else. Realtime, and specifically streaming, on home uncapped is not functioning as advertised.

Gaming should definitely be unshaped, regardless of the shaping level applied on the account.
We're always testing and comparing feedback from what we've seen from our clients.

Drop me a PM with a bit more info and I'll have it passed onto my team.

Right.

More proof of some rate limiting BS going on here.

As you will notice the account and line CAN hit 440kB...but then promptly drops to 250kB odd. As if some ceiling exists there to keep it at that speed.

Thanks, I've just taken a look at your PM. Let's troubleshoot there, just easier to consolidate all the infoz :)
I'll have this all passed off onto our Critical team for analysis.

Just logged in with my capped 1gb account. Ran full speed at an average of 430kB.

Changed back to uncapped...capped at 250kB.

Honestly this could not be more clear cut.

Either my account is messed up on Afrihost's side or you are limiting the speeds artificially.

And until evidence is provided to the contrary that will be the position I maintain and no way am I recommending such an account to anyone.

And yes...I am fairly upset.

Another test result.

At 5am today I checked and no shaping was active in my profile and I started a youtube video. It ran at full 440kB/s on my uncapped account.

Now the only difference between 5am today and 5pm yesterday - when it ran at a max of 250kB - was that shaping was active yesterday. I leave it to you to draw a conclusion from that.

I believe that the same "phenomenon" can be inferred for my issue as during the day, when I try to game online, I encounter issues. This is why turbocharging, or playing late at night, or the early hours of the morning, leaves me with no issues at all.

YouTube is definitely not a shaped service so I really think that we're looking in the wrong place here. I'd like to see the test results so that I can also offer alternative theories if possible, based on the activity on the network at the time.

What I can promise is that I am prepared to work with you and try to solve this regarding your individual experience. If you're willing to do that, if there is a problem on the network in general I will personally escalate the issue.
