Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Another test result.

At 5am today I checked and no shaping was active in my profile and I started a youtube video. It ran at full 440kB/s on my uncapped account.

Now the only difference between 5am today and 5pm yesterday - when it ran at a max of 250kB - was that shaping was active yesterday. I leave it to you to draw a conclusion from that.

There could be many other factors, like activity on the network, your local exchange, etc. I'm not saying that those are the causes, but we should test further. If we go straight to shaping as the issue, we could spend a lot of time looking in the wrong place while you're still having a poor experience. I would much rather troubleshoot with you and make sure we're focussing on the right issues :(

I believe that the same "phenomenon" can be inferred for my issue as during the day, when I try to game online, I encounter issues. This is why turbocharging, or playing late at night, or the early hours of the morning, leaves me with no issues at all.

Which game are you having issues with? Do you know if the game uses any P2P elements? Also, are you running any other services at the same time as gaming?

The game is The Last of Us: Remastered on the PS4. I am not entirely sure of what type of servers the game uses, as it is all speculation in the game forums and no official word. If it is using P2P, this still doesn't explain why the PS3 version works without a hitch and the PS4 version doesn't. There is no word of changes to the servers or them having dedicated servers etc.

Even if it is using P2P elements, how do we circumvent this issue? At the end of the day, online gaming is online gaming.

And no, there are no other services running concurrently. Everything is always stopped or paused, and I am the only person using my connection.

Hi AfriMan.

This is why I posted and ran ping tests to my exchange, traceroutes and tested with 3 accounts.

Tracert's on all three were perfect - 10ms response on exchange and 3 rd hop - no latency on any other hop.

Afri capped account ran perfect, WA capped ran perfect, Afrihost uncapped - ran poor.

I do a dns flush and IP renew between each test and ran them all twice.

I'm sorry but the exchange or my line is not the issue. I've ruled that out.

Logical testing practice is to identify what is different between scenario's and in this instance the shaping being active and inactive is the difference.

I'm open to other ideas and possible causes sure - but please explain why as in SO many cases as being reported here by multiple users (in the business and here uncapped home) people are all complaining about poor streaming.

My tests confirm that there is some kind of ceiling speed limit being imposed when running the uncapped account.

Offer me reasonable and functional alternative answer and I'll be all ears.

I believe our team are getting in touch with you (if they haven't already) to discuss the queries brought up under your account.

Day 15 and still being shaped moertoe.

It's been over 2 weeks with NONSTOP shaping - 24/7

You people are a bunch of gangsters preying on the innocent with your lies about "awesome internet" blah blah.

Before you go on about usage and aggressive bullcrap - I am the furthest thing from an aggressive user, I download a max of 30GB per month.

Hi

Shaping definitely doesn't run 24/7 :(
I think at 30GB a month, Capped is a much better option. Maybe you should look into that?

Eeeeek, after some of the feedback here I am starting to worry whether I will be making the right choice by going with Afrihost. :-/

Telkom are installing my telephone line tomorrow and then I was going to sign up for a bundle with Afrihost. :S

Can't stop looking at this thread. It's like a horrible train smash :/

So sad.

Hi PsyClown, you'd be well advised to keep your line with Telkom until you're happy with your ISP.

Seriously the same response?
If rhodad is really having an issue, shouldn't you be trying to help him sort it than just suggesting he changes accounts?

We have test accounts that we monitor, shaping isn't happening 24/7.
I'll gladly look into the account itself though - open to anyone sending me a PM :)

Since s/he has repeated the complaint. Shouldn't you customer support or you pm him Instead?

Can't see a duplicate query, I was simply offering an alternative.
I think if rhodad isn't happy moving to a Capped account he/she can let me know and we can take it from there :)

Your CC guys got in contact with me and I will be running some more tests tonight and sending through the results.

If you don't mind, please let us know if your problem gets resolved, I'm very interested to find out what's causing the issues.

That is utter nonsense... I just cancelled 10MB Home Uncapped for my Dad. 5 months of shaping at 12.5% and 6.5% for 20 hours of EVERY DAY. First, we were told it was because of IPC shortage, then it was Telkom's fault, and then you guys were running "tests". To be classed as a high usage user after doing 200GB in a month is load of crap. Besides the fact that your shaping was applied from day 1 of every month, and even so-called realtime protocols were being affected.

It would be really nice if AH would STOP peddling that horse pucky in the forums... there was, and is still a major shortage of bandwidth/IPC in most of the country - you guys have over-sold the network, and run way too many free double data give-aways (plus mystery bonuses).

PS. The more you shape and limit people, the longer they will stay on and tax the network, the worse the performance of the network for EVERYONE - this is the main reason for congestion and high contention, and NOT Telkom's exchanges - proved over and over by the fact that ONLY AH / Axxess / MTN accounts have this problem... ALL other ISP accounts from the same location perform as they should.

..... but I suppose it must be my line again, hey???? Let me not get started on the degradation in performance with my so-called "premium" Business Uncapped account.
