Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I meant trying a new 4Mbps account on your profile, instead of the account you have been using. I'm just wondering why it would work for me and not you, unless there is something specific to your account. I think it's worth a try and has worked for one or two other clients :(

Ah. In that case no. I have not been given an alternative uncapped account as yet to test with. Considering the temporary uncapped account your guys gave me a few months ago when I had similar issues ran perfectly fine...it could be worth exploring.

Indeed. I would say it's worth asking the Critical Care guys to arrange for you :)

I'll need a little more information to follow this up.

Can you run a traceroute so I can see what your general connection is like to their services?

Can't see any obvious issues here, is it just Supersport streaming that's slow?

Yeah, except for some other flash based streaming, everything is running great, hence me trying to find out from fellow Afrihost users if they're also experiencing problems.

Anyone else Star citizen just can't seem to get pass dial up speeds on a 4meg line? It hovers around 10-25KBps... 6Gig patch is taking about a week now and there is still 7 patches to go.

Well if you are on the home uncapped account, all downloads will be shaped to 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P until about 10pm tonight. They shape on weekdays and weekends, it makes no difference.

It does look like Afrihost has classified Star Citizen's download as p2p, and it is being shaped at 6.25% of your line speed.

For me, flash streaming is usually slow. On a good day I can get 100kbp but on average about 50kbp. On Youtube at fastest was about 120-150kbp. Average 110kbps On a 2mb line.

Streaming has always been up and down for me.

Afriman, i miss the days of unshaped weekends...
Will they ever make a return?

We'll need to test those services on our side. IF you want to determine if it's shaping, use a turbocharge credit and see if the service immediately improves or does not change at all.

It depends on the outcome of the testing we're doing. At the moment, it looks like shaping on the weekend could stay, but we're also testing how much we can lighten shaping without putting the network in jeopardy.

Remember that downloads and patches will be treated as non-realtime while the actual game traffic will be treated as realtime.

We'll definitely need to run further diagnostic tests here. If it's a realtime service, we don't want to shape it. You should get better realtime throughput on a 2Mbps line, assuming you are using a 2Mbps account and not a 1Mbps account :(

I'm actually on a capped account, changed over beginning of August.

Realised now I should probably be posting in a different thread.

Supersport did improve over the course of the weekend, perhaps the problem was on their side.

I'll keep on monitoring it and report any problems.

Someone posted that they had logged an issue with Mweb or Supersport before the weekend and there seemed to be an issue on their side and peering with JINX or CINX. I don't know all the details because the client had logged directly with them. Might be that this was resolved :)

I've cancelled my account, have 2mb uncapped. Download about 70-100GB a month which I don't consider excessive? Internet is so slow now I have to switch off wifi on my phone and use mobile data to browse

Hopefully WebAfrica will be better

I'm sorry to hear that you've decided to cancel. Since you'll be with us a few days more, I hope i can try to figure out why you're having such a poor experience.

Have you run any testing or troubleshooting? Is your line slow on all services or just on shaped services like downloads and torrents?

Everything is shaped. Bloomin PDFs are shaped.
This service has degenerated into the innovation called openBrowse by openWeb.
