Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Was about to ask "What's up with the mail servers down again?" but rememered you're on twitter.

25 minutes ago - "@Afrihost: We are aware of Web Hosting errors reported. Our technical team are investigating and we will update as we receive information -s"

Just curious if the Clientzone is down as well for technical reasons with the forumites hurling cyber abuse via it, or basically the entire support team decided to get out of the line of fire and take the whole morning(day) off?

It seems like we also had an issue (though very briefly) at Gallo Manor but was totally unrelated. We have several ClientZone servers at different data centres, but if you hit that server, while there was an issue, you might have seen an error. Would not have been more than a few minutes and it should redirected you to the net available server.

I have a minecraft server hosted with oceanhost.co.za. I have never been able to play minecraft on it using my afrihost account (it will log in, but has too much lag to play). Instead I have to use a telkom account. Do you know why this is, and whether anything can be done about it?

It's really hard to say, we'd have to run some tests to see if we're not getting throughput to the server or if there is high latency causing the game to be non-responsive. What do you see on a basic trace?

Have you been seeing high demand for 5 days straight? No break? Because my speeds have not changed, it has remained this constant crawl as none of my downloads seem to be getting past 3% completion. As mentioned, my clientzone says no shaping applied, but my speeds definitely indicate 100% shaping. Please could you provide me with what times this "fixed shaping" applies? So that i can schedule accordingly and change my monitoring.

Demand has been consistent over the last few weeks, depending on the time of day etc. and from what we can see it's continuing to increase.

Fixed shaping is currently being applied from around 7:30am to 10pm, depending on which region you are in. Essentially we are still shaping by demand, we just see that by predicting the demand during the peak period we can provide a better experience than allowing the system to dynamically shape, especially with limited network resources.

@Afriman

I just canceled my ADSL account with Afrihost. I couldn't continue for obvious reasons. I really hope one day you guys get your legendary status back. Then maybe I will return. I still have a hosting account with you guys though. I hope that doesn't get any issues. But I must say, I've experience zero problems with that so far.

Good luck with the current bickering.

Sorry to see you go, although the reasons are understandable :( Best of luck for the future, hope to see you back with us!

Unfortunately i am in the same boat. Will be cancelling when i get back home. In the process of looking for an alternative ISP. Will change my package to just a 1gig free account just in case things change in 2015. That way, there is less hassle reactivating my account. I think your consumer base is just to large and your capacity is way to small to handle the demand we require. Good luck gentlemen!

I dont like changing ISP's. If Afrihost can at least faultfind the issue why some capetonians are getting 1kB/s when there's no shaping then I can live with it.
But not being able to find the error/admit, this is Telkom territory...

@Cynicalguy, going to WebAfrica? Thats what I'm looking at

Slow throughput may be due to high demand in the area, we're waiting on upgrades to see this resolved.

Wait wait wait. You said you might consider making the fixed shaping a permanent solution if the capacity increase doesn't solve the problem?

Then...

1) Why isn't enough capacity being provisioned?

2) Afrihost stood out from the rest of the ISP's due to its demand-based shaping system. What would then make it competitive if it's permanent? What makes it any different from the other uncapped ISP's (barring those on the star system).

3) Again, really? The reason most of us are with Afrihost with uncapped accounts was exactly because of the suitable shaping policy. Now because there's a shift in usage trends towards streaming (which you're blaming the suffering capacity on, but it does sound about right yes), you're considering going back on your offer?

This doesn't sit right with me.

I don't think any plans have been finalised at this stage.
More capacity is on the way :)

Will stick it out for 1 more month. Pending more capactiy. But i honestly cant deal with 1kbp/s speeds. I am based in Cape town, Rondebosch. It is absolutely shocking. Managed to clear a total of 200mbs last night. My mate on a 2mb/s line go through almost 9gigs at a constant 1.8Mbit/s download speed.

The East (DBN and surrounds) already have their upgrades, North & South upgrades are imminent.

Hey Guys

Some great news. We've received our upgrade in the North and we're already seeing better performance overall. Our technical team will be monitoring and calibrating the network over the next while, but we expect most people will be getting much better performance on realtime services, though shaping will remain as is for the time being.

Please let us know if anyone from the North is still having a poor experience (especially seeing any latency or very poor throughput), but bear in mind that it will take us a little time to get the network working optimally with the new IPC in place.

Thanks to everyone for their patience while this was being sorted out.

I already had an account with ITNT. They seem pretty good so far.
