Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Ok, that's something, but definitely hoping for shaping to return to the levels they were at before. In other words, rarely shaped, and only lightly when it is.

Realistically, I think heavier protocols will always shaped during peak times :(

My problem is more with the definition of "heavy protocols". Taking hours to download a nvidia driver update (or a steam update, or a battle.net update, etc) shouldn't be the case. I have absolutely no problem with P2P being shaped, but that HTTP shaping really hurts bad and it punishes people for downloading small, legitimate things as well.

I fully understand where you're coming from - but even Steam downloads are quite a heavy resource on the network.
If you do need something downloaded quickly during peak time you can always try a turbocharge :)

I'm not sure I understand what you wanted to do here. If you downgraded then upgraded, the system may well charge a pro-rata fee, though in most cases it should also discount against fees already paid - but we can't always think of every possible process.

Drop me a PM so I can figure out what you wanted to achieve and how I can help.

Dont stress. Already signed up with Mweb this morning. Keeping the Afrihost account as a spare one until I can actually cancel it next month. I cant deal with paying R600 a month for a 2Mb uncapped line (supposed to be 4Mb).

Yeah I'll cope - as long as Netflix streams without issues again I'll be semi-happy. Tempted to change from Uncapped to a 300GB cap, but the prices for the higher cap ranges are still a bit high.

It's a miracle. Middle of the afternoon on a weekday and for the first time in months I can actually use Citrix - while simultaneously downloading Windows Updates no less.

Let's hope it lasts past the 1st, and isn't a ploy to get us not to give our 1 calendar month notice at the end of the month :)

Great to hear that things are looking up :)

How are p2p downloads on afrihost uncapped these days?

I was forced to changed to a capped product in April this year due to the fact that I was being heavily shaped all day Between 01:00 and 05:00 it got fast.

But for my 10meg line 20kbps download speed was just silly.

Anyway so how are things at the moment? are things back to how they used to be in 2013?

I am in Southern Suburbs of CT.

Thanks!

EDIT: It is not mumble.

When BF Battlelog is open - all traffic is shaped on home uncapped. I though gaming was unshaped? Please review BF4 packet signatures.

Did more tests and I would greatly appreciate it if any other BF4 gamers on home uncapped could confirm my results.

When Battlelog is launched, all protocol data is shaped. YouTube unusable. This make playing BF4 and using a voice chat service like Mumble, Ventrilo or TeamSpeak a problem if you have a slow line limiting downstream traffic.

Please can this be looked at Afrihost. BF4 traffic is causing all protocol data to be shaped - ergo BF is identified as shaped traffic.

We know that we have some performance issues in the South at the moment related to capacity. However, we expect to receive an IPC upgrade very shortly and this should resolve this pretty quickly.

I would say sign up a free GB account and check for yourself. Maybe wait for the confirmation of the upgrade here first and test when our network is at it's best :)

If there is any shaped traffic on your connection, QoS would kick in to try to deliver priority to realtime services. It would also depend on the server's you're using as some use different protocols for their traffic. Our tests with BF4 to the official EA servers show realtime classification, but if you're playing elsewhere, we'll need to analyse whether we are identifying the signature correctly or if they are using P2P elements. So we'll need to test with you to determine this.
