Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Been running abso-bloody-lutely perfectly the whole weekend.

YouTube has never been running this well.

Well done. No PLEASE keep it this smooth.

Currently unable to watch YouTube on my 4meg line. 480p buffers constantly, looking at net limiter, my browser is capping at 60kb/s. This has been going on for a while now, intermittently, and is getting quite frustrating.

Twitch is running with no problems at all on High.

On a side note, the "Magically fix my line" button on clientzone does not work - always errors.

Morning Guys

Just want to apologise for not replying to PM's for a while. I've been man down with a bad chest infection and haven't had a chance to reply to messages. I'll reply to all the PM's I've missed during the course of today.

Thanks :)

The fix my line feature is a little problematic in some cases as Telkom have made changes to their infrastructure on the back end. It does work sometimes, which is why we have not pulled the feature completely, but we may have to a some point.

YouTube should be performing well. If twitch is running, I am guessing this is not a throughput issue necessarily, but what sort of general stats are you seeing?

Morning - just checked youtube now and still unwatchable. With YouTube set on auto, the quality defaults to the lowest, 144p.
Line speeds definitely don't seem to be an issue:

Can you drop me a PM with both traces and also the usernames?

Also, just to be 100% sure, you are using Dynamically assigned DNS, correct?

Hey AfriMan

Maybe you can help.

the first results are from the free 1gb account, normal results.
second results is our 4mb uncapped account. which you can see has some questionable results

I got your PM, seems pretty odd. Especially with the 2nd hop timing out, so not sure what could be happening. Latency on the Uncapped account is very weird and unstable :(

Still running like a charm.

Also...the Mumble / BF4 combo issue is also a thing of the past.

Been running flawlessly since I checked on Friday.

Although I've not checked the shaping % when I was playing.

So far so good.

Good to hear. I think many peeps are on holiday so shaping should be lighter now that demand is less.

Hi

I've got a 2MB home uncapped account and we bought a new modem on Monday after Telkom came to fix the line. Since then, we've been getting randomly disconnected every now and then. Sometimes it's every few hours and sometimes it's every few minutes and sometimes every few seconds. The support guys are implying that it's a problem on the modem side but these results seem to show something else. Or am I reading too much into these results?

I logged into the Telkom guest account and ran a tracert to www.google.co.za as well, and on the step 2 for that, the times were 32ms. Please advice. Thanks.

It looks to me like you have severe congestion on your exchange. It's important to remember that the Telkom guest account routes differently to normal ISP accounts so it's not necessarily reliable to indicate congestion or line speeds.

Looking at your latency, I can imagine at times latency is so severe that it would seem like you have no connection at all :(

Not it would seem like, the line drops (i.e. internet light on the modem goes off) every now and then, like I said, sometimes every few seconds to every few hours. This with a brand new modem and a brand new DSLAM (I think) port from Telkom.

*sigh*

It could be that if your router sees very high latency, it will drop the connection and try to reset.

That's a new one. I'm going to be a little more proactive. I'll set up a log and monitor the goings-on of the modem and line, see if there is any pattern occurring that I could be missing.

Thanks again for the help, it was a shot in the dark coz I'm really frazzled here.
