Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Ah, that explains it. I was also scratching my head over it when I saw it this morning.

Cheap way for Afrihost to skew public perceptions, because now everybody who goes to their Facebook page sees compliments instead of the complaints about how god-awful the service levels actually are. Well played, though, Afrihost. It's very underhanded, but a very smart move nonetheless.

Actually, that was not the intention at all. We are doing away with our monthly newsletter, that's why we want to encourage clients to follow our social media and our website newsroom.

@afriman
The AH app is pretty useless only showing usage from the 1st of the month - please ask your software department to also show a 30 day rolling window usage.

Don't even bother asking anything regarding their app or client zone, I've asked previously to indicate on their clientzone if we fall into the throttled group, and their reply was simply

since we are moving towards a real time dynamic shaping system, it will be difficult to display and explain what these mean.

IMO this is quite simple, they know who to throttle even on a dynamic shaping system, just indicate "THROTTLED" next to the connection. Surely not all users download @ 23% of their actual line speed.

Also bee PM Afriman regarding my Sync @ 8030 instead of 10240, but no reply on that either.

Just got home to find my connection running at close to full speed :)

EDIT: Ok scrap that, back to sub 30KB/s

EDIT 2: and its back at close to max again

Compared to my line speed, I've downloaded substantially less this month compared to the previous month, yet Afrihost support told me that my line has been 'managed down' and that was the reason for me getting 1/16th of my line speed. Whether or not that was true, or they simply apply this throttling into the ground to everyone, I cannot say for sure.

Long story short: It seems to me like everyone is affected. Even at parties and other social gatherings, people will bring up Afrihost and ask if anyone else are using them and having problems as well, something I've never seen with any other ISP.

1/16th your lucky, I'm getting 1/20th

It's a new month, so the counters have been reset. It will last until you've downloaded 5GB, then you'll be 'managed down' for 'abuse' :D

I'm just waiting for the 25th of December to come so I can go with another ISP. I seriously don't understand what point of uncapped is if you can't download on it.

You guys can't speculate that Afrihosts QoS will be the same as last month. Yes support is intentionally not specific regarding the criteria for throttling but I think the reason is because they're still not decided on what it should be. Lots of downloaders will have left so the rules might get relaxed. Also we would only be able to see during the day On weekdays if the throttling is still the same as since the past week they have adjusted it between weekdays, time of day and weekends.

As I said in the PM, there is no throttle to display. We are giving priority and capacity determines the download throughput available. If that is changing constantly, I can't see how we would meaningfully display that?

Sorry I haven't replied to your PM, but I will get to it as soon as I can. :)

That's simply not true, and it kinda implies dishonesty on our side :(

Download throughput is determined by capacity on the network. We do our best to give a fair spread of throughput, and once our capacity is upgraded there will be a lot more to go around. I think it's a fair system, and it can only get (and has already gotten) better.

I don't really see how it implies dishonesty. But here are a couple of facts:
1) Afrihost support told me that my connection was throttled because I downloaded too much
2) Compared to my line speed, I only downloaded 56% of what I did in September when there was no problem.
3) I haven't seen anyone say 'I get full line speed' without having to retract that statement a bit later.

So I don't really know what is the truth. Do you throttle people based on their bandwidth usage, or do you throttle everyone to 1/16th of their line speed?

But in any case, I didn't mean to (and I don't think I did) imply any dishonesty.

Just want to say it makes it more confusing when we use different terminology to describe something, it makes it harder to assist. People are talking about throttling and shaping, and it's purely a question of priority - which is Quality of Service. Throttling is saying no matter what you do, you cannot get more that X on any service. That is simply not happening at any time.

We're still busy training up our guys to give better information. If they're talking about throttling, that's wrong and I apologise. A few people have posted full lines speeds without retraction, but I do acknowledge that there are ups and downs.

Getting max on AH newsserver icon14.png

Had to digout my ancient newsbinpro key :erm:

Actually, 'quality of service' is about giving priority to one type of traffic over another. Throttling is intentionally lowering the speed of a link to reduce bandwidth usage. You guys are doing both. You're throttling all data that is not Youtube or games, making my internet connection feel like a 56k modem for most of my usage, including trying to load an image over HTTP, which also gets throttled to 1/16th of my line speed.

Well, I mentioned the throttling and in response the Afrihost support guy said that my account had been 'managed down'. Unfortunately you did not clarify if you throttle users extra after they've gone above some unknown data limit for a month, so I and everyone else will have to continue to be unsure about that I guess.

As far as I'm aware we are only using Quality of Service. Perhaps becuase the priority is not applied in real time it may feel similar to throttle, but the fact that it changes from hour to hour, and full speeds can be achieved does show that it's not throttling.

If I with no other traffic on the line can only download at 1/16th of my line speed, then it's throttling. That it sometimes goes all the way up to 1/4th of the line speed does not change the fact that it's throttling.

Exactly. If you it can go from 1/16 to 1/4 in the same day shows that it's not throttle. When we throttled clients, they could not achieve a different speed, on any protocol, and even if there was capacity on the network they would not be allowed to go above the rate limit / throttle.
