Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

For the first time my http downloads are going at 112kB/s, from the usual 30kB/s
 
Local vs International Speedtest - why the huge difference???

Local
Test conducted on 02 December 2012 16:28
Download Speed: 2139 kbps (267.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 533 kbps (66.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 51 ms

International
Test conducted on 02 December 2012 16:30
Download Speed: 645 kbps (80.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 491 kbps (61.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 233 ms

Atleast World of Warcraft hasn't been to badly effected with about 254ms been the highest all day, compared to yesterday of about 233ms highest..

Looks like we are heading in the right direction, just want my IPC in Cape Town NOW......
 
Ok so yes I have an Uncapped account even though all I really do these days is game on it...
Orginally it was for the work I did and the need to move large volumes of files internationally and of course the kids needing to spend time on school work and animation work for my son.
my bitch is that I will hardly do more than 50gb in a month unless its patch/expansion time and all these download on a P2P basis, with the odd torrent here and there, but QoS treats me exactly the same as someone who abuses the system and also whitelists urls that i couldnt really give a damn about..

My question is this... can QoS be set in such a way that it treats clients differently or are all painted with the same brush??

If I exceed a quota, I will happily live with been "throttled" but if I don't why should i have the same issues and those who exploit the system etc....
Yes i am happy to live with the increased latency (as long as it does go made and stays around 230ms), just not happy when graphic intense pages take forever to load and ofcourse the missus and bratz complaining about facebook taking forever to load...

I'm not angry, especially not with you. You're one of only two persons in Afrihost I've met who actually have a clue and want to help. I don't mind people stating their opinions, but there is a difference between an opinion (such as 'I like the colour red') and ignorance (such as 'Earth is flat'). My problem is people who, despite the fact that they know that they don't know anything about a subject, still feel a need to inject their 'wisdom' into a discussion, thus completely derailing the discussion.

See, we were talking about the throttling Afrihost are doing, and instead it turned into a half flamefest because someone like I described above injected his 'wisdom' in a rude and confrontational manner.

I also think it's fair to mention that if you want your line speed all day for whatever you want, then maybe Capped is the way to go. Uncapped is and always has been a shaped product. And we shape the product according to how we feel the best performance will be achieved on the services we feel our clients are more concerned about. Sounds like maybe you should give unshaped a go and see if that works out a little better.

And USA has some of the worst internet connectivity in the world. South Africa and Australia are slightly worse, but other than that...

Before I moved to South Africa, I had a 100Mbps internet connection for roughly R300 per month. Fkatrate and completely unmanaged, of course. My mother has a 10Mbps internet connection she pays something like R150 per month for. And that's without any bull**** throttling being applied to it. Most of USA, OTOH, have something like a 4Mbps cable internet connection with a rather low monthly usage limit attached to it.

@ Afriman - If I could make a request, is there any way you could get speedtest.net shaped the same as with downloads? would make it a hell of a lot easier to see how badly downloads are shaped/throttled/QoS'd/whatever.

Performance was surprisingly good until yesterday afternoon when it went down to 7KB/s till I went to bed. I waited an hour and a half just to download Firefox and even YouTube sucked. I ended up cancelling. Im keeping my line with afrihost, because I'm planning to go back to them when this whole thing eventually blows over.
