Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

So you can break it down like this:-

IPC:
JHB remains at 8Gbps (which is our current national capacity)
CPT gets it's own dedicated 3Gbps
DBN gets it's own dedicated 2Gbps
National capacity goes from 8Gbps to 13Gbps

International Access:-
JHB and CPT break out directly on WACS (upgraded to a 10Gbps STM-64 Uncontended link) (from Cape Town)
DBN breaks out directly onto EASSy (upgraded to 10Gbps) (from Durban)

National Backhaul / Infrastructure:

JHB to CT to JHB - 10Gbps Fibre Link
JHB to DBN to JHB - 10Gbps Fibre Link
CPT to PE to CPT - 10Gbps Fibre Link

We're also deploying an upgraded (state of the art) CDN (Content Delivery Network), Caching System, Route Reflectors, all to make sure there is ample redundancy and better technology to deliver content faster. We're also introducing our own Google Node, making Google services better than ever.

Some of the national infrastructure/backhaul upgrades are already complete or underway, and we're waiting on Telkom to implement the IPC. Once that has happened, we'll be able to break out internationally along WACS and EASSy as mentioned.

I promised awesome - hope this is making some hearts skip a few beats :)

Would it not make sense to loadbalance across WACS and EASSY rather?
I mean why would durban with its 3Gb of IPC get 10Gb of EASSY while the 12Gb of CT/JHB gets 10Gb of WACS?

It depends on what other areas are also routing via Durban, and it would be a 10GB contended service, whereas WACS is 10GB guaranteed to Afrihost/MTN users.
 
All looks pretty great. If I could ask someone to clarify, would the impact of these upgrades greatly effect and improve international latency. Roughly speaking I understand that the new IPC's will somewhat improve the latency, but will the move onto the new cables further improve the latency that one could get?

Any ball park idea as to when the IPCs will be implemented, and the cable connections made live?
 
Well it's all looking good. I'm sure the service will be quite good once all of that capacity goes online and all the bugs are ironed out ( i have no doubt there will be a few teething issues). I'll probably sign up in the next month or so.

Latency is generally introduced when there is high contention for bandwidth, which is not properly managed. While management or shaping may mean things move a little slower than if there was less competition, it ensures that everyone has a fairly reasonable and similar experience.

Think of it as a highway with one entrance and one exit. When there is no traffic, it's not to bad to get where you're going. When there is high traffic, everyone has this long delay, even though some are travelling a shorter distance than others cos there's only one exit that everyone shares. Now think of these upgrades as both adding more lanes on the highway, and adding more exits on the way, so people can get off closer to where they want to get, and spend less time in the major traffic (which also reduced the bulk of traffic on the highway).

Afriman we need trial accounts. Even if its only for a day or so. Perhaps afrihost could implement something. It's really the best way to restore confidence, since quite a few customers got burned and will be unlikely to give afrihost a go for quite some time.

Ja AfriMan, preferably with the 40Mb/s Uncapped - Just a day would do fine :P I can haz the WHOLE internetz with that.....he he :)
 
****, yeah, 40mb uncapped would be sweeeeet.... 250gb with a 20% of max line speed soft cap... for R1299 per month...

When I see you post something, I know you're complaining about something. Why don't you just ask your mommy to cancel your afrihost account and move on.

Hey man, if the guy is having issues with his line, he should report it - that's why the thread is called "Feedback"
No need to mock the guy...

It's like calling the Number behind a pack of Simba chips when you find peanuts in it... they WANT to know when there are problems, so they can fix it.
if nobody says anything, Simba won't know, and would start losing customers.

Telkom have offered MTN to be part of the 40Mbps trial, but it ends at the end of this month anyway, so not sure we'll be able to take advantage of it. We're (I'm) trying, I can promise you :)
