Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I have been watching the speed and connections over the past week. From 23h00 I'm getting full speed, however come 08h00 everything turns to dust. During "business hours" can't get anything higher than 50kB/s. This is on a 10Meg line.

I know Afriman said that it is dynamic depending on the usage, but 50 everyday at the same hours, I don't think so
You are part of the new group they have formed for users like us. Welcome to Afrihost leper usergroup. We formed a club and have jackets and meet in this thread every day. Our questions get deflected with the mighty QoS shield Afriman wields like Captain America.

Just think the membership fee of this group is bit steep - Dial-Up @ the price of ADSL

That is what makes this club so great, expensive dial up, the s******ing looks Mweb users give us and that look of pity 2013 ISP of the Year Plugg users give us.

guess their network is quite busy this time of night (23:21pm) a pdf download (6meg) took about 4 minutes to download on my 2meg uncapped. Granted my line is syncing at 1.4meg.

Ah well. Hoping Telkom get me back to 4meg. Come Feb i'll trial Mweb, Plugg and decide between the two.

My co-worker is cancelling his Afrihost. Said the same thing (except he is on 1 meg) line. He can see during 23-6am.. he gets full speed. After that 15kb/s. Every day ...

My sentiments exactly!!

There seems to be a general authentication problem affecting ADSL clients. We are not sure where exactly between our network and Telkom the issue lies, and our guys are working on this to get it resolved.

It does not seem to affect all clients, so it has been difficult to trace. If you have a current session open, rather don't reboot your router, just keep your session open until we know the issue is resolved.

Will keep everyone updated.

I have been getting 5 - 10kb/s every day for the last week (Saturday was normal). I feel like taking my PC and launching it out the window!!!! But that will not solve anything as I used the free 5gb from Imaginet and I was flying like a boss!! Even after the usual 23:00pm when I used to get full speeds, I am getting well under 10kb/s. Please get this resolved. Maybe there are too many people involved e.g. Telkom, MTN, Afrihost, Piet Pompies, Random hobo down the road. Please keep us updated. This is not something that happened overnight. This has been a week-long problem! (from my side at least).

The authentication issue should be resolved now. We are still not sure what the original cause was, but this caused a backlog of authentication requests, which created a bottleneck on our authentication server. We sorted out the bottleneck and cleared the backlog, and things seem to be working normally.

Sorry for the inconvenience :(

I see a lot of posts since last night about download speeds on Uncapped, and I can understand the frustration. As I've said, we put a system in place, but download speeds also depend on how the network is used. When there is a period of high demand, it's difficult for us to give more capacity to downloads without risking high latency across the entire network. I can see that the demand is easing off, perhaps businesses' running updated from coming from holiday has eased off, but things should slowly get better. Off-peak also seems to be an issue, perhaps other clients are queuing up multiple torrents and P2P files to run continuously, which is why we're not seeing as big an increase in DL speed as we expect after hours, and especially after 11-12pm.

Just remember we're jumping to over 50% more capacity when we implement local IPC in DBN and CPT, and this should change Uncapped performance dramatically. We are doing our absolute best to make the Uncapped experience the best possible considering all our clients needs, and I can promise that we are sparing no expense on every possible solution for the short and long term.

things seem to be improving.

8:45am, Tuesday
- 2meg uncapped, on a line syncing at 1.3 (waiting for telkom to fix to get me to usual 4meg)

Tried a torrent for about 5minutes and it was running at 70 to 100kb/s.

Afriman, think we all need a definite date for implementation of IPC. If you say its 3 weeks then fine, if its two months I will have to look for another supplier, the same goes if you are not sure. Please just say one way or another

If that was true then people wouldn't be having such crappy speeds over the last two months. You're definitely sparing expenses short term. You even said so yourself a week or two ago.

Not sparing but Telkom can't supply till then.

This service was much better when I joined it, now it's just getting worse day by day. I'm trying out the mweb uncapped trial at the moment, man is it good. Pity it's R200 more :(

Afriman, what is the ETA on a local IPC in CPT?? As much as I appreciate all the good things AH has given us in the past (freebies, etc...) I will have to jump ship if these uncapped issues persist.

Erm.
So is that such a good idea?

It's like those radar-operated speed warning signs... people will aim for the high score!

Also, 800GB in 30 days on a 4mb account?!

Afriman, you need thresholds and throttling. I'm sorry, but these people are ****ing it up for everyone.

They are allowing people to flagrantly abuse the network, a network that is in a terrible state. Whats worse is that they are proudly displaying these figures on their site as if its some kind of achievement on their part. Whichever PR guy that decided this was a good idea should be fired. Final straw, i have cancelled my account.
