From what I can gather, there were a few areas in Cape Town last night that were having issues - which sounded like exchange congestion or issues. At some point quite a few people in the City Bowl also lost connection completely, though I wasn't able to find a notice by Telkom. From my tests I couldn't see that this was an issue on our network.

Anyone have a different experience / theory?

my tracert's didn't show issues through the exchange and speedtest's were well standard, but browsing and gaming were horrid.. got better around 0120

Has anyone else started experiencing a shaping change. I use to be shaped during office hours which is from 7h00 in the morning till 18h00 in the afternoon, on all downloads (which i had no problem with) but as of lately I'm being shaped up till 23h00 or 12h00 at night. I'm on a 4mb line and I only get up to 50kb/s on downloads.

Yes, and when I bitched I got the old story of high usage and network congestion

It's not a time based system, we work on demand. We always try to give the maximum throughput on all services possible, but where demand is high, we the priority to real time services, and P2P gets lower priority so speeds will vary. When our new capacity is implemented, we should be able to give better speeds to downloads during peak and off-peak usage on the network.

We haven't made any shaping policy changes since we updated the priority on HTTP. The system is dynamic so shaping is not time dependant, but capacity based. Everything is driven by the demand for bandwidth (and the services in use) at the time.

What are the present tiers of priority AfriMan?

E.g.:

Tier 1
Realtime, including Google Search, GMail, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Streaming video sites, Skype etc

Tier 2
Http direct downloads
or however is works.

I know my little router has tiers in the form of Highest, High, Normal, Low, Lowest, with certain protocols like online gaming, instant messengers, VoIP and some programs listed.

How is AfriHost categorising stuff and what falls in which tier?

I see you say that news.afrihost.com is in the same catergory as P2P, is that only for that server or does it apply to other news servers as well?

It might be an oversimplification but it's basically

HTTP / HTTPS Browsing, Gaming, Streaming (Video & Audio), Terminal Services (RDP/SSH), VoIP
HTTP File Transfer
NZB, P2P, BitTorrent, etc

news.afrihost.co.za

nothing to join it is open for Afrihost customers as long you logged into your AH adsl account.

That will be all news servers.

Thanks very much. So I can't use Bitcomet, http download, NZB or P2P. Sweet! I was hoping there was a way to get more than the 20 or 30kb/s I am getting but those hopes are dashed now. Afriman, you have my line and data. How much does it cost to keep my line with you (hopefully I can come back in better days)? But I need an data account that works. Paying for a 1mb line and data but getting 1/4 or 1/5 of the speed is not acceptable. It is like buying a six pack but only allowed to take 2 home. Hmmm beer!

It's dynamic so there will be times when those services will run at full (or close to full) speeds. When our additional IPC is implemented, there will be a lot space to allow better speeds at peak and off-peak times across the board.
