I see a few complaints about shaping and I just want to put our thoughts out here for your understanding and comment.
We don't want Uncapped to be a prescriptive product. Other ISP's market Uncapped, and then the small print says you are shaped or throttled into oblivion and then unshaped from midnight to 8am or something similar.
We believe that Uncapped can be a totally different experience, and we need your help to achieve this. As I've mentioned before, IPC costs a crap load of money. And if you follow news on MyBB, you'll have read that Telkom's latest IPC price cut was nothing to write home about. When you buy IPC capacity, you don't get it from certain times or for peak and off-peak rates. You pay a set fee, no exceptions. To justify what we pay in IPC, we need to see significant throughput at all times of the day and night, meaning that the IPCs need to run as hot as possible 24/7, so that we can justify increasing capacity. When usage is concentrated over a certain period, say office hours, leaving 16 hours of the day running "cold" - we can't motivate for more capacity, no matter how congested the peak period is.
With everyone trying to download (especially torrents) over the same period, we have to shape aggressively, whereas other times the network is completely unshaped because no-one is using it to capacity. We need your help to change this pattern. If we can see network usage consistently over a 24 hour period, getting more capacity is going to be much easier.
Please - schedule downloads and torrents as much as possible between midnight and 8am. This will relieve congestion and allow everyone to have the best experience 24/7, not just after midnight. With your help, we really can do this.
