Afriman if the shaping were of a sporadic nature as you are implying then I wouldn't have any issues, the reality though is that my account has been shaped 24/7 for at least two weeks now.

The only thing dynamic about the shaping protocol is how severe it will be at any given time, 50% at 3am and 12.5% to 25% for pretty much all waking hours.

Does this seem reasonable to you?

No, even mine is no shaping after midnight, you did send AM a PM with your details didn't you :-)

Sorry to hear our guys didn't get back to you on this. I was told that this was being sorted out with you. Please drop me a PM so I can follow it up with the team and make sure they follow this up ASAP :(

Still not resolved. just an e-mail to say they are 'working on it'. Come the 24th ill be 'working on' my cancellation if its not resolved.

It think the comparison is a little unfair. As I've mentioned, we're mostly talking about a specific time of the day when a group of people experience shaping more than other times. It's not to say that the network is always shaped, and that they are always shaped to the same degree, which is not the case. Our planning takes peak traffic into consideration, but also have to offset that with off-peak traffic, when we have to maintain a large amount of capacity which is not being utilised fully. So it's not simply a case off adding more capacity, but utlising the capacity we have to maximum efficiency.

Sorry to say but this sounds like 'smoke and mirrors' to me. Perhaps the last word in your quote should be changed from "efficiency" to "profit'. Really hope you guys get this shaping thing right very soon because, otherwise, your service is great.

I have been throttled on downloads the whole day, this is ridiculous. 7pm on a Friday but yet 6.5% shaping?
2 days of horrible afrihost internet in a row

Another question, why can I go onto youtube right now and stream 720p video at my full line speed (220kbps) but yet that capacity will not be allowed for a http download?

Streaming is classified as "Real Time" usage and is therefore always unshaped. HTTP and P2P are the only things that get shaped. Flipping hell, I sound like Afriman.

Sporadic isn't the word I would use to describe how shaping is implemented. It's capacity based. If the capacity is consistent over a period, then shaping would be consistent as a result. But usage changes over time, just like the highways are busy at times, and then deserted at night. I'm fairly sure that shaping profiles change several times during the day, and that is directly in relation to usage and available capacity at any given time.

I just want unshaped internet after 8pm on a Friday. Is that really too much to ask?

Uncapped accounts can possibly be shaped at any time according to the current demand for bandwidth. That's why we advertise it as a semi-shaped product. If you want guaranteed unshaped bandwidth, you might be better off with capped, or Business DSL. Both are extremely reasonably priced.

The priority goes to realtime services, as the usage pattern changes dramatically when compared to downloads, especially P2P. Once torrents and downloads start dominating demand, real time services start experiencing latency, and while some may prefer to get max torrents cos they don't use YouTube or Skype, we believe the majority of our clients would rather have premium real time services at all times, even if it means slower downloads at times.

I am under the impression that Business uncapped is shaped after hours!?

Been shaped the whole day .......... "The fairly sure" is not true!

Our aim is to never shape Business DSL, but we do reserve the right to in extreme situations, such as IPC outages or in a case of heavy demand for bandwidth. At present we have hardly ever had to shape business traffic since our new IPC's went live.
