I've done 9GB on a 1Meg line this month and I'm shaped at 25% on download and 12.5% on P2P :/

We look at your usage over the past 30 days. Not necessarily in that particular month.

Sorry, just a question. How are these shaping policies implemented? Im on a 2Mbps uncapped account but on the clientzone i have the following message:

64.0GB DATA USED

Data Statistics
Data Used: 64.05 GB
Average Daily Usage: 3.05 GB
Average Monthly Usage: 2.07 GB

100% REALTIME
SPEED

Account Overview
Account Status: Account Active
Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P

I was on 50%/50% this morning and the only thing i downloaded, were a few linux distro updates. Now im sitting at 25% and my distro updates are crawling at a staggering 5kbp/s. Just wondering if i need to cut back on downloads? Or is it pure luck on who gets what when IPC is stretched out...

We look at the past 30 days overall usage when we shape. We also shape from the heaviest users to the least. Not saying you should cut back on your downloads, may schedule them for off peak times.

Ok, then clearly im being robbed here....ive never exceeded 80gigs in the last 2 or 3 months. Yet im being shaped down to 25%....Yes i know perhaps the capped options would be more beneficial for me, but i prefer the peace of mind. Is there anyway i can check my monthly averages? Im pretty sure the most i've used was 80gigs, in which case i really don't see how Afrihost can legitimise in any form or many, shaping me on a 2Mbps when i havent reached 100gigs in the last 2 or 3 months.

You can check your monthly usage via Clientzone 2.0.

PS. Better to private message us your details, might start getting some random emails otherwise.

Hahah, its just my account name. That account is a dedicated 10gig spam email :D. But seriously though, its quite ridiculous to be shaped if your 30 day average is less than 80gigs per cycle.

You can't actually view your total usage in ANY of the clientzones (just btw). I had to have Afrihost email my logs in .csv files. I havent used more than 80 gigs this YEAR. Jan - 80gigs, Feb - 78 gigs, March - 68gigs, April - 70 gigs, May - 64 gigs. So how in all that is mighty, am i being shaped at 7pm at night....

When the network demand is high, we start shaping the heaviest users. If the network demand does not decrease sufficiently, we need to increase the number of accounts that need to be shaped.

So the longer the network demand stays high, the more accounts need to be shaped. Shaping is only applied for as long as network demand is high. As soon as network demand decreases, shaping starts to be removed. And removing of shaping is done in the reverse order, so low-end users are unshaped first.

Fair enough, but then it stands to reason that users on the 10Mbp/s and 4Mbp/s should be pulling a lot more bandwidth than users on the 2Mbp/s and 1Mbp/s lines. If you are telling me, and it seems like you are, that demand becomes so high that even people pulling 9gigs in 30days is considered as being in the top tier of downloading? If so, then surely Afrihost needs to look at its overall capacity. Logic clearly dictates that something is wrong if the QoS policies are reaching all the way down to low end users....if Afrihost cant accept or won't admit to this. Then its actually a joke. And im sorry, but ill probs be moving elsewhere, simply because the network refuses to admit that its highly unlikely that someone pulling 9gig over a 20 day cycle on a 1Mbp/s can be affected when there are users pulling well over 200 gigs on the faster lines.

All I'm looking for here, is some deeper clarity and stop hiding behind the automated responses of "When the network demand is high, we start shaping the heaviest users. If the network demand does not decrease sufficiently, we need to increase the number of accounts that need to be shaped", because there is so much ambigiouity in that sentence and quite frankly its not a sufficient enough response.

What sort of peer2peer speeds do you guys get on the normal uncapped accounts?

I'm on a Openweb Gamers King account, and my speeds after hours are 100% (non existent throughout the day) but I might need some downloading potential throughout the day in the coming weeks.

(10mb line)
Advice?

So I took the 10mb Business uncapped yesterday after my post and 10 minutes later my dslam goes down, which according to Telkom can take weeks to fix.

Just paid for the rest of the month for nothing. Lekker.

You can claim double your money back btw. Its advertised on the Afrihost front page. 60 day double your money back. Unless Afrihost have hidden terms and conditions. There seems to be no transparency with ISP's anymore and its a sadening realization in South Africa :/.

Guys pleas answer.

I see alot of mweb people coming over to this account.

Is there really a much better connectivity and stuff here with the gaming and general usage?

Then again how is the newshost and torrent downloads?

I game and download alot so want low pings and max speeds.

Rest of the family loves facebook and youtube...

Will look into that. Thanks!

Besides my international gaming problems everything else has been good.

If you'd like, please send me a private message, we can arrange something for you while your DSLAM is being repaired.

last night, during the Xbox reveal live stream, I experienced quite a bit of stutter, allot on 720p stream, and a bit less on 540p. I have a 10Mb bundle. I am sure it should not be lagging @ 720p at all, and I don't even want to mention 540p....Could have been the stream. Did anyone else experience this?

I experienced that too, but so did CNET as their feed cut out. It was just Microsoft's server obviously being overloaded, not afrihost
