Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I had that but cancelled it since it is linked to another adsl no. I will have a diff Adsl no. once the line is activated.

Gonna look at the Adsl Line and uncapped bundle.

As long as you sign up a different ADSL line, you can still sign up again. :)

Cool, how long does it take to get the line activated, it has never been used for adsl.

It depends on Telkom's available resources like technicians and ports at the exchange. Telkom give themselves up to 30 days to convert a new line to ADSL, but it can generally be a lot faster. Just depends on their resources in your area.

Mine took a few days so they are generally quick in PE.

Quick Q Afriman. I assume we connect to the Cape Town IPC in PE. Cant we connect to the DBN one to avoid that congestion that those useless peeps in Cape Town are causing

Actually from a PE point of view we do not seem to be getting their congestion - My 10meg Uncapped has been flying here :)
You DO NOT want to connect through to Durbs, trust me! - We will have horrible latency! - We have a great connection to CapeTown which will hopefully be improved even more soon. Also, as AfriMan had pointed out, there are no issues with the IPC anyway :)

That is a valid point. Latency was better with mweb though but only slightly. I am very happy with Afrihost but an IPC in PE wouldnt hurt :D I heard there was some TTD cable that might land here.

I'm not sure it's that simple, and with PE being a major city too, there might be a few PE peeps downloading all those Linux distros. Don't forget that part of the upgraded network is a fibre link from PE to Cape Town, so chances are we're sticking with the current network mapping.

Let's just hope that now that everyone's downloaded the new season of Arrested Development (legally, hopefully) there'll be a little more Interwebz for everyone else :)

Recently cancelled my mweb account (have to wait until the end of June before I can switch), I have a 1GB free Afrihiost account, which I have not really used. I am thinking of moving to Afrihost Business, so I decided to test my account yesterday, but the speed was as poor as my mweb connection. It was fast the last time I used it. Is this an indication of the true network speed?

Maybe run a TraceRoute when the speed is slow and check if it is not congestion seeing as your MWeb account was also slow?

I have done many tests, and speed test shows fantastic results, its just downloading is slow, not torrents, but normal downloads like Nvidia drivers etc. I have had Telkom test the line, they claimed they changed a few things at the exchange, but still the same issues. About 2 months ago when I last used the Afrihost account is was flying, last night it was crawling.

Well post some tracert's from both networks when you have this slowness, then we can maybe see if there is a problem.

It depends on what the issue is. If you've got issues on your exchange or line (or even your router) pretty much all results will look the same. We'd have to run some diagnostics and analyse any patterns to determine what the cause could be.

Drop me a PM, we have some really experienced and knowledgable guys in our team who can talk you through it :)

1GB Free accounts are unshaped, so we definitely aren't affecting downloads. Also, if there is intermittent packet loss, it might be might be more noticeable on a download than say, browsing. The only way to know for sure is to run some comparative testing.

Will do, but probably next week. I am busy playing doctor, nurse, chef and parent to a wife and child sick with the flu.

Hi Afriman. Thanks for the answer :). The line is already there on my account and the business data account signup is R397 for 2mbs -
I am signing up for the Business data portion and it works out to R597 overall (same as the bundle as the line already with you ;)). So everything is sweet. Just want to know if/when Business is shaped? (I live in the Eastern Cape if you need a location).

Business is no longer shaped at any time. Guaranteed unshaped 24/7 :)
