Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Hi Afriman
I have noticed that I can never get more than 50% of my line speed on Nzb's 12pm - 6 pm during weekdays. Is that normal?

Thanks Afriman,

I will go and plot my usage when I'm home to see when things went pear-shaped and make my plans accordingly.

One more point of clarification please,
Is the throttling adjustment based on active usage or over pure time?
In other words, if I switch to a secondary uncapped account from another ISP, will it have an immediate effect on my throttling based on the rolling window or is the consideration based on my active usage on that account irrespective of actual time factors.

I might PM you later if I need assistance in determining my actual usage pattern.

I understand completely that you have to pay to play, so I'm just wanting to get the facts so that I can make an informed decision.

Thanks again.. :-)

I think it might be better to chat around the specifics of your situation, so rather send me a PM with you username and I'll take a look :)

Hallelujah!! After a week of running in circles and Afrihost support telling me to talk to Telkom I found the answer .
Afrihost uncapped 1Mb download speed 0.3 Mb Axxess capped (which is part of Afrihost ) download speed 1.75 Mb .
The test was done 5 minutes from each other during the day . This is with 30Gb last month and 30 Gb this month .

The proof is in the pudding .

I use uncapped afrihost never had a problem :) fantastic service.

OK, so now my local ping has gone back to normal, but I am only getting international 2Mb/sec...

I'm gonna have to cancel if this keeps going on. Is this related to the SEACOM cable?

Lol, no I actually left Openweb and moved to Afrihost due to me always having to change accounts when I had a hassle. To me the problems were never addressed and just bypassed and I don't like that approach. Deal with the problem until it's fixed is my preference.

Afriman, thanks for your response on this, but I am going on what was quoted to me by your support staff in writing to my problem ticket.
Could you please just clarify once more Afrihost policy on thresholds
I'd like to know for the uncapped accounts individually
1) What are the thresholds
2) What happens specifically when those thresholds are reached
3) How long and under what circumstances are the original services restored.
4) Is the billing adjusted pro-rata for the duration of the diminished service

Once we have this info, we should make a sticky of it as it seems to crop up fairly often. Especially with the guys new to Afrihost like me.

And if I subscribe for the 10M uncapped service on a 4M line, will me thresholds be higher.?

Lastly, is my line locked/throttled, or can I just buy another account and switch between the two when I get throttled?

Please answer the above as completely as possible for me.

Thanks a ton... I want to restore my Pure Internet Joy... :D

I moved from OpenWeb for the exact same reason. They gave me like 6 different accounts in 2 months. Some of them actually still work:D

Makes me wonder if they put more than one person per account

Yeah, they never seemed to address a problem and fix it - it just find a way around it by trying a different account and or backbone.
I don't like that approach, as I know the problems are never fixed. I'd rather work with them for longer and get to a solution - that will give me confidence.
Also, my Openweb GOLD account was performing on par with the standard Afrihost uncapped account.

I'm glad I moved, but IS is still a bit of a thorn for me.

I'm wondering, on the 4mbps uncapped, what's the lowest speed a person would be throttled down to? I heard 1mbps?

We're only getting like 30-50KB/s :/
About 30 minutes ago it was on at least 130KB/s but this afternoon at about 3pm it was the same as it is now. Last night it was also as slow as it now, but it went faster and slower the whole time.

I was just playing BF3 and noticed it started lagging more and more until i got a timeout error and then I checked speedtest.net.

Ran it it again just now and timed it, it took 1 min 41 seconds to complete just the download test and it's on 44.4KB/s

The lowest you can be throttled is 1Mbps on a 4Mbps uncapped account. If you're getting lowers speeds. If you're getting the kind speeds, we'll need to check if you are being throttled, or if there are other issues causing these slow speeds. Send me a PM

My slow day time speeds are continuing for 2 weeks now. Afrihost says it's a Telkom problem and I've laid a complaint with Telkom but my own speed test results using the Telkom Guest account vs the Afrihost Uncapped account show otherwise.

EXACTLY the same problem! My Afrihost uncapped is soooo slow, but any other capped account is full speed all the way. Problems for about 3 weeks now.

Afriman please help - I have been emailing support for about a week and they still haven't managed to fix it... I simply can't afford R700 a month for what is an after hours 4mb account. I barely get 2mb as it is.

I want to keep this account, I really do. However the speed is just so poor...

Let me clarify:

1. Other accounts run fine.

2. The speed picks up at night.

3. My exchange is not congested.

4. I have never exceeded the throttle limit (max about 50 gigs last 30 days).

Thanks
