Just cancelled my uncapped bundle account.Lets hope the MTN move sorts these problems out.
Bitterly disappointed that this is the 2nd time their uncapped accounts have not lived up to initial expectations and promises.Only have myself to blame
Still a fan of their capped accounts :D

All of a sudden (After 5pm)

Test conducted on 19 September 2012 05:04:52 PM

Download Speed: 3085 kbps (385.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 860 kbps (107.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 37 ms

Did someone flick a switch?! From 0.91Mbps at 4:45pm to 3Mbps at 5:04? This is obviously deliberate...

Yep, now getting a constant 3 - 3.2 Mbps. Before 5pm, a constant 0.9 - 1Mbps.

If this is unofficial policy (as is obviously the case) then fine, but it then must be advertised as such: 1Mbps from 9am-5pm, 3Mbps from 5pm-8pm and 4Mbps from 8pm-9am.

+1
What I found annoying the most is that Afrihost believe that their clients are stupid .

There's the congestion theory out the window.

Mine back at 430KB/s as soon as the clock strikes 17:00. Some serious throttling going on here.

If we are being throttled be open about it! Don't wast peoples time asking them to log calls. You will reset their ports and tomorrow they will be throttled again until 17:00.

It's also just annoying the crap out of people.

Exactly! They must know about this, since they are the ones doing it! Just a bit of honesty would go a long way...its a plain lie to say that they aren't sure what's causing the speed issues.

Looks like we aren't the only ones being with this problem.

People at OpenWeb are also complaining about daytime speeds on IS.

Afriman is this a recent change on the network? This is also why MTN is going to be the answer

Or alternatively it is IS who is doing the throttling (congestion control :) ) and not telling Afrihost. Just to spite them for moving ISP's...

To clarify: Nobody throttles ad-hoc unless there is congestion and you need to prioritise traffic. So throttling is just congestion control. Business hours, business traffic takes priority. Congestion results in uncapped users being throttled.

I understand that, but this has been happening for a while now. 1Mbps (Or a quarter of whatever your account speed is, it appears) from 9-5 and full speed (or close to) from there on. This is obviously what someone has decided on. That's fine, but then this service must be advertised as such and priced accordingly. Quarter line speed 9-5 and full line speed thereafter. It doesn't appear to be dynamic prioritisation or adjustment to changing network conditions either, just a general rule applied during the specific times, and they must be honest about that.

Sorry for the general reply, but here is the best update I can give at the moment.

We do not have an "unofficial" throttle policy in daytime. There is a prioritisation of Capped over Uncapped, which makes sense, but we would still want uncapped accounts to perform within reasonable limits, and it seems that generally there are issues. We have been logging this daily with IS and they are looking into the issue. We don't have an ETA at this stage, but we are following up as a matter of urgency.

In other news, as I mentioned previously, we are starting to get preliminary test results off the new network, and they are nothing short of excellent. I'm hoping to post some results soon, but I have a personal test account and it is really surpassing my expectations.

So in short, we will do everything we can in the short term to get this fixed and back to acceptable levels, but we are also confident that in the long run our clients will be well looked after and will ultimately be on a premium service.

Afriman out :)

Hi Afriman,

I would like to know, how do you explain those of us who are getting a sudden speed jump after 5pm exactly?

Hi Afriman,

I would like to know, how do you explain those of us who are getting a sudden speed jump after 5pm exactly?

It's exactly like traffic, if there's congestion and too many people trying to get where they need to go on the highway, everyone get's there slower. When it's 6pm and the rest of the people are at home, you can drive as fast as the laws of physics will let you. As I said, capped traffic prioritised over uncapped and should always perform better or the same when the network traffic is minimal, but that's not to say we are OK with Uncapped performing at less than acceptable speeds. With capped/uncapped, we are basically saying that users on capped can travel in the fast lane, while uncapped users can travel as fast as they possibly can considering the congestion. Well, that's the theory anyway, but it gets more complicated when you introduce issues like routing, when sessions were started, what type of traffic (protocol) is in use, but that's the basic idea.

During business hours is when the bulk of internet usage is at it's maximum, particularly between 11am and 1pm. Most people leave work exactly on time, and hence there is massive drop-off in network use, and speeds will dramatically jump. When you are talking about tens of thousands of people switching off within a space of 5-10 minutes, it's pretty significant.

I'm starting to ramble on here, I think, but am I answering your question?

What devices do you own? iOS 6 jailbreak shouldn't be too long as they already have a jailbreak for iOS 6GM

Sorry in advance for the off topic chat guys

IPad

Don't actually use jailbreak extras too much anyway, though being able to ssh in is pretty useful sometimes.
