Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Yeah after 1.5 hours they managed to get my ADSL line so I could auth again

Back to 300ms ping on AH to a local IP
on a Web Africa Account I get 64ms to the same IP.

So it is NOT telkom related.

Clientzone says I've done slightly over 250GB this month.

I'm thinking that I am now severely throttled, so I'm just kinda rolling with it for now.

Sucks @ss, but that's the price to play I guess.

Something very broken there.
Sadly I think mtn is living up to their reputation :(

@AfriMan , awesome network!! NOT!!!!!, most pathetic excuse of a network i have ever encountered. Should have just kept your traffic on IS would have been better.

Downloads rocking on my side.

Downloading a new Android ROM, using torrent and speed is excellent.

Seems like some imbecile got his shaping algorithms the wrong way round. Shape normal traffic the hell in , unshape torrents LOL

Busy looking at other ISP's now.
Going to move my 3 or 4 accounts that I use for me and my mom elsewhere if this crap carries on.

It's not shaping. Torrents by their nature will be quick on a high latency connection, merely because there are dozens of simultaneous connections, so the impact of latency is lower.

Speeds are fine its latency which is **** and the killer for most people.

I'm okay with that, not a gamer.

My speeds pretty good all round after hours, and reasonable during office hours. I hope it just stays this way, works for me.

Local ping tonight is +200ms.
Yesterday it was 30ms.
Afrihost website reports that all is functioning well. What's up with that?

Oh, lucky you! I'm getting an average of 320ms ping to my uplink tonight. Normally it is 12ms. At the same time downloads speeds are absolutely terrible.

Afriman, who broke your network and when is it going to be fixed?

It doesnt just effect gamers, it effects all type network traffic, streaming, resolution looksups.

At this point I'm wondering if plain old dial-up would give me better latency and speeds... Now where did I put my US Robotics modem?

How is Afrihost in general with NNTP (not their servers but Astraweb as an example) ? I have been with MWeb for a couple of months and NNTP (with Astraweb) has been awesome. But since the 1st of Oct, NNTP has been shaped heavily. I only get above 30-60 kbps on a 2mb line somewhere between 11:30pm & 7am. Weekends too. http is degrading fast as well - even though we are told there is no issue at all. Most sites athat were not a problem before also only load at 60kbps.

After attempting to get this resolved, I have decided to look at alternatives. From what I have gathered in my attempts to resolve this is that this heavier shaping policy Mweb have introduced , along with their denial that they are doing so, is something that is here to stay.

So I am willing to try another ISP. A test account for a day or 2 would be awesome. Otherwise I am going to have to rely on feedback. I don't do torrents. Just NNTP & http with the odd (large-ish) ftp session once in a while.

Don't have the time to game these days, so gaming performance is not important.

I'm also rocking the high latency to everything, ~300ms to everything local. Download speeds not effected, but I got home wanting to hit some games!! :(
