Interesting. So, with your ISP Background, and knowing that Afrihost now resides on MTN's network after moving off IS, one would think you would know that they are 2nd tier.

MTN - their own network
IS - their own network
MWEB - their own network


Afrihost is really just a 'virtual' ISP.

Still do not see how that would help you in resolving your technical issue speaking to a support guy/girl.

Clearly this is going to get out of hand...I might be that MTN was buying BW from Telkom directly or from another Wholesaler and this is what I was trying to clarify. Look...clearly this is not going to get anywhere so lets just drop it.

Im paying R108 a month for my 1MB openweb account. I doubt you're paying less than me.

When I left afrihost, I was downloading at 56 kiloBITS/s and I still see people complaining here and on social media about similar speeds.

I'm trying to download attachments from my G-mail but only getting like 3kB/s and then it times out. I had to do some work before I leave for holiday and now I can't do anything on my 10mb Uncapped and I have to spend a fortune on my MTN R2/MB.

2 years. My past experience has been quite good. Even when taking into account the MTN switchover.

I am sure you know PM principles. I do too. I also know a PM is not going think of ALL possible the "what if" and "worst case" scenarios. I am also pretty sure AH did not put all of that responsibility on a single PM or two.

Sorry I haven't been posting much, I did say so a few days ago, being the festive season and all. But always available on PM, so please use that if you need an answer right away :)

Firstly, to the guys saying that the network is worse than ever, it's simply not true. If you're basing this on you're own experience, that fine. We don't shape specific network nodes, switching points or DSLAM exchanges, as someone implied, to do so would be ridiculously expensive and cumbersome. We manage QoS exactly as we say we do, nothing more. And to those also quoting the "just look at their social media" type proof - please do. Look at the dates, and the subject of the various posts, if this is your yardstick it clearly indicates that overall performance is much better, and in general Afrihost clients are pretty happy. As for me, why would I resign? I have the most awesome job in the world, working for the most awesome ISP in the country.

Secondly, if you've moved on to another ISP, while we are always sad to lose a client, we respect your decision to do so. But it is entirely disrespectful to us and those who choose to stay with us to post things like "Really feel sorry for you guys" etc. That's just trolling, it benefits nobody.

Had some hiccups this week, but today it is awesome - ping is good (haven't seen a local ping of 22ms for a very long time), downloads are good.
Hopefully it's not just a case of everyone being away on holiday :)
Even it that was so I hope this is a taste of what's to come when the new IPCs are installed in Feb.
 
Sounds like all is working nicely here. Truly glad to see this. It's been a long road, and we're almost there.

I'd love to know how many issues people are having in here are down to the office troll leaving torrents to hog a million ports... Or downloading his MSDN subscription on the server,etc...

Could I ask the guru's of this thread:

I'm presently weening off mobile broadband and thinking of getting Afrihost uncapped ADSL. One of my main consumption issues is Steam game downloads, 8ta's 10gb isn't even enough for some games these days :)

How well does Afrihost fare in providing a steady download for steam content? Which line speed would be recommended for gaming use inclusive of downloads like these, 1, 2, 4? My pockets aren't lined in cash so I'd like to go the economical route, but would like to select a line that isn't uselessly slow either.

Good sysadmins block torrents at work.

Bad sysadmins dont.

I block torrents, due to the fact that pipple dont understand the concept of throttling their downloads, plus if world+dog start torrenting at work, we're gonna battle with bandwidth-saturated lines.

Also, it is not always easy to pick up bandwidth-abuse until several cow-orkers start complaining about slow line speeds etc.
