Lemme be devil's advocate here, you actually believe getting a refund after you pulled down 15GB in 9 days on a 384 account is fair? How is that less shady?

You could always ask them to charge you per/GB for that 15GB.......

Or a refund based on the difference with the promised uncapped cap of 200, oops 100, oops 60, oops 30, now 15?

I wouldn't in any way expect a full refund. I should pay for what I have used. I honestly don't care about the money. But it is an uncapped account. I have used it for 8 days. Therefore if they are honest about their services I think they should refund just over half of the monthly amount. There is no where on their site or FAQ where they insinuate that a 384 line will be cut in half once you download 15gb. That to me is unacceptable. Throttled yes, shaped yes, but cut in half? I think that is unacceptable. Again, I don't care about the 100 rand, to me I just don't think they deserve my money with a policy like that. They should not be able to continue to call it uncapped. it is not an uncapped account.

It must be tough for AH - trying to make everyone happy , trying to make a buck, and , trying to keep their network good.

I think everyone should just be happy if they get their gigs below the R9 mark... and speeds above 50KB (yes I know someone will moan at me for this but, oh well)

so if you push more than 60gb with good speeds on the uncapped then you're winning as far as normal prices go..

They should actually call the accounts unmetered or softcapped accounts...

You on to something. My target (break even) is 15gigs. Anything above that is bonus. And i'm half way there already.

Have they actually stated this yet? I signed up for the 384 Uncapped in late March and have had no issues with browsing or downloading. So far this month, I've used about 11GB in total. I see now that the FUP has changed dramatically for the 4Mbps users but thought that AH were still reviewing how to deal with 384 and 512 accounts with nothing yet decided (or published to the user base...)

I am being throttled to hell.... using 384k account... torrents are running at 0.8KB/s.... HTTP max speed is 12KB/s.... News servers running at 8KB/s on CACHED content. I can't even load the afrihost client zone. This is freaken terrible

Enjoy your next 4-5 gigs, because after that you will be labeled an "abuser" and your connection will be cut in half. :) I got an email from afrihost saying it is because people are downloading illegal torrents and copyrighted stuff. Everything I downloaded was perfectly legal.

That's not on! What exactly did they expect people to do with uncapped accounts, other than to go nuts on torrents, video streams, newsboards, etc? And when did it become acceptable for an ISP to determine what content their clients are allowed to download? Part of me wants to cancel the account and move elsewhere; the other part of me knows that I'll run out of things to download in a couple of months and then the 15GB will be more than I need.

When you hit 15gig you will get throttled to 7-10k all day, all night, all the time regardless of what you're doing. I sent a support ticket and the Afrihost hamster said I should reboot my router... lol? I did an actual facepalm :wtf:

edit: I just want to say again that I dont think 15gb for R200 is unfair! they should just not lie about it! If we knew it was a 15gb account we could budget so it only runs out at the end of the month. The only reason I have already used 15gb is cause they said the account was uncapped!! ffs

Well, I am pretty disgusted at the way this has all been panning out. I have had my Afrihost account since last year and always been impressed with their offerings. I went for the 'uncapped' (reason for inverted commas is because this is a false name for what it's turned out to be) because I use a fair amount of bandwidth just for browsing and day to day usage. I do download and run updated etc. Further to this I do use P2P software for the odd torrent and so on. When I first read about the 'uncapped' accounts last month it was explained that there would be a speed issue from time to time, there was even an analogy of a pizza place used. Fine, but nowhere did I read that you would explicitly get heavily throttle if you use your connection to its full potential. On my 384k line I have done about 17 GB so far which is in my books a lot, this includes the 2 GB of normal capped bandwidth that I had, so in reality then 15 GB on the 'uncapped'. The transfer speed wasn't too bad for the first few days, but has steadily being getting slower. From last night it has become almost as pathetic as dial-up speed at times.

Now, Axxess has their old Uncapped account (now I see they call it Express Uncapped) where it clearly stated that there is a rolling threshold which kicks in during working hours basically which throttles down to half speed IIRC. But basically you know what you are getting.

Enough of that though, back to Afrihost 'uncapped'. As far as I am concerned, if this what the 'uncapped' account is going to be like going forward, I am not interested at all, I'd rather pay less for a capped account that delivers. It really should be called 'uncapped - maybe 56k...'

I find it a bit difficult to believe that AH are deliberately doing all this. I get everyone's frustration (I'm not having any such problems on my AH account) but AH don't exactly have the track record of being deceptive like this. I suspect that the problems you're all experiencing have some other source.

Um, no. I still have my normal capped account with Axxess, switched over this morning when it was REALLY slow, and guess what, wasn't slow anymore. So, hmm, can ONLY be AH! :(

I don't know if it would actually do anything but in other threads people have recommending filing a complaint with ASA. http://www.asasa.org.za/Complaint.aspx
It only takes a few seconds to do. Maybe if enough people do it, there would be some standards set to keep the providers honest.

X2... Connected with my FNB Connect account this morning just to check speeds. Torrents went back up to super speed... as did browsing, and pretty much everything really.

Just did a speed test on my AH account:

Fail. Hard fail.

So I've used up approximately 31GB on my 4Mb uncapped account this month. According to my speedtests I'm throttled across the board. Even streaming audio or youtube buffers every few seconds. Highly irritating.

I'm moving back to my WA account.
