Torrents are not even worth trying. It is currently downloading at an amazing 3 Kbps and uploading at 33Kbps.

I wonder how this will go down when 8Mbps connections go live.

I've tried to be a loyal supporter in light of Afrihost in light of what they've done in terms of reducing bandwith prices in SA, but the speeds I'm getting (when I'm getting ANY) are pathetic. If it's not Afrihost, it's IS. I'm gonna see if I can switch over to Mweb, or maybe just go back to their R29/Gb.

hmmmm 4mb uncapped AH, data usage sitting at 52GB
http news server download (easynews) sitting at 104 KBytes/s
Vuze torrents at between 5-10Kbytes/s

they have apparently shaped my line to 1024mbps; so they AH support says.....

ps. has anyone read the thread regarding Mwebs rolling 6 months 30 Gig fair usage policy? I contacted Mweb; they have no idea wat im talking bout lol

wow, just hit 20gb on my 384 account and now my speed has been throttled to about 9kb/s and news servers are no longer downloading any more than 1-2kb/s if I am lucky and more often than not just timing out on the astraweb servers. Out of curiosity, once they capped me I switched my main computer to my web africa account and have another computer downloading constantly in the background on this useless afrihost account to see how bad it will get since this account is now worthless. Apparently when you hit 20gb on 384 the service becomes completely useless. Please tell me how they can continue to call it uncapped when it becomes slower than dialup? I can get 60mb in an entire night downloading all night if I am very lucky.

You're lucky. When I hit 15gb my account became completely useless. Not being able to download anything is the least of my worries. I can't even browse!

It saddens me, but it looks like I'm going to have to cancel too - cant pay for a connection I can't even use to browse.

It's shocking that they're even adding additional throttling to 384 accounts in the first place. IMO these accounts should not be subject to usage based penalties as any reduction in speed results in the connection not operating at much better than dialup speeds. Also considering the fact that 4mb users can only ever be throttled to 384 makes throttling those on 384 even more unfair if you're trying to prevent the extra usage.

speeds are still terrible. i have had bad speeds since tuesday. on 384k line and was getting 36k+ but now not more than 8k and browsing is terrible... only downloaded 20gigs.... is it just terrible...

Afrihost told me there is no throttling on my line; that its shaped during peak times and throttling only starts at 30GB. but here we all are with sub-10k lines

Currently at 45GB - newsgroups coming down at 15KB/s and speedtest doesn't even load. I am signing up for an MWEB account. But not until I have abused this account. Might as well do what I am being "accused" of.

No throttling??? LOL Raaaaaiiiighhhhtt. I'm at 15GB and I can't do anything - including browsing. All other accounts including Telkom and Web Africa are perfectly fine.

Lets we all move to MWEB.... Teach Afrihost a lesson and then they will change their policies

at this point my free 512 mweb account is faster..
i'm getting full speed on that...testing 60kb/s

that will last me until april 30th..

My openweb 4mb doesnt have this problem. I am running at 400k+ at the moment! Poor AH, they really dealt a bad hand to their customers

Funny thing is MWEB phoned me yesterday, getting back to after I inquired about their uncapped ADSL via their website (took them 2 weeks to get back to me though!).

They asked if I was still interested, I said I joined Afrihost instead because they took so long. She then proceeded to ask me if I follow the mybroadband.co.za forums, I said no (I lied, my bad lol), she proceeded to tell me that Afrihost heavily throttle their bandwidth and asked if I was aware of this.

Was quiet surprised they used the mybb forums right off the bat to sway my choice in an ISP!

Guys, send the word "Help" to 32541 and an Afrihost consultant will phone you back. They person I dealt with didn't seem to be aware of the issue and has told me he will contact me shortly once he finds out. Hopefully this will help us get to the bottom of it.

I have a feeling it's only a matter of time until Mweb users have similar issues.

I give Mweb credit for rocking our broadband world with their uncapped offer. But thats where my respect for Mweb ends. I promised myself I would never support them.

So at this stage I would rather have no uncapped than go with Mweb.

We'll see what happens in the future.

Dude.

Mweb is a much bigger company than afrihost. Bigger would mean bigger buying power. They have a huge budget so i think if their bandwith runs out, they will acquire more and acquring more with mean that they get a bigger discount. I personally never liked MWEB cos of the absorbint pricing in the past but currently they have a better service. If Afrihost improves their service and changes their policies, i will stick with them but i dont see that happening very soon.
