Afrihost uncapped?

If I spend the same at Afrihost that I've been spending for years on Vodacom's 3G, it feels just like I'm uncapped :)

Given the speed that they maintained during the dark hours in the last few days when other ISPs were below the floor- likes of DC- I would very much jump to an opportunity to join their uncapped.
But now their customer service seems to make me think twice or maybe 100 times, about leaving the chillies.

... Gian is member of this forum and probably reads all Afrihost threads ... I'm quite sure Afrihost will reply eventually.

Dave is always here and he always, almost, responds to any post concerning DC. I think Gian should approach Dave and ask him how he does it, coz he is working too.

In fact, We Are All Working Here!!!

Wow. This post is really incredible - Truly warms my heart to see all the support.

So first of all a HUGE thanks for all the support.

Second of all Big Kudos to Dave & his team from DigiChilli for the innovative uncapped product they've recently launched - I wish them all the best from the team at Afrihost.

As I've mentioned before Uncapped ADSL is definitely the way of the future. We are definitely planning to launch new ADSL solutions at some point in the future. Our first priority now though is to make sure we get the Capped solutions as perfect as possible and become the leaders in the Capped ADSL market. To be honest we still have our hands full with this!

Our aim is to launch an Uncapped solution at some point in the future.

The question of course is when?

And unfortunately I do not have a definite answer for you.

What I can say is that before we launch our uncapped offering we want to be 100% sure of certain things:

1. Our product has to be truly Uncapped. Completely. No upper limits for GB usage.
2. It must be well priced and affordable for all.
3. The uncapped product line needs to be a viable (i.e. profitable!) business long term.
4. The connectivity has to be rock solid and consistent no matter the demand and client load. We have to be able to deliver what we promise.
5. We have to be able to give superb support & service. Our service levels have to delight no matter the demand.

Are we able to meet all of these criteria?

I passionately believe we can!

However, there are many challenges ahead of us.

The biggest is providing an infrastructure that can meet the demands of bandwidth starved South Africans so that they can get great connectivity and speeds consistently - while still making it a viable business venture for us!

Thanks again for all the great comments and I'm sorry that we can't help you out with your uncapped needs right now - But I promise you that we will do our best to do so in the future!

WOW that would be great to get uncapped. Afrihost is in my mind currently the best value for money, most reliable and has the best customer service. I have an account with Digichilli but they are forever down so I always come back to Afrihost :)

Delighted to hear bradz!!!

Amazing how I never get tired of hearing good stuff from clients :D

Well done for not jumping in immediately. I'm glad you're thinking/planning this through unlike a certain ISP we know (it begins with an 'S'). Good luck, I hope you succeed.

Also, good to see you on the forum again, Gian. :)

tx, for the great offering & brilliant service - loyalty is currently guaranteed!

...uncapped - soon as you can, please Gian - to manage 50 GB Afrihost account on a monthly basis is just too cumbersome.

I just want to communicate, surf, watch, download and you take care of the rest for an economical fee.

good luck and regards

m

...when the infrastructure is available, I would prefer:

Monthly contribution not to exceed R 1.5 K
Instant Activation / Effortless migration from current subscription package
Access via Fibre
Choice of Local & International Bandwidth
Online Stats of Traffic Usage (per router MAC address / per individual concurrent connection) (additional fee would be acceptable)
Connectivity notice board in “Client Zone”; listing of real-time backhaul ISP bandwidth provisioning status (including national and regional infrastructure status)and possible service interruptions (ETA included) with the ability to subscribe to (immediate) notifications via email & SMS (additional fee would be acceptable)
5 Concurrent Connections
No Port Shaping

***********
Services you could do away with: (or charge an additional fee for)
email, webmail, f2e, afrihost smtp (and associated services), static ip's, contracts

keep it simple

I for one Michael, love the email, webmail etc that Afrihost provides. Gives me a nice alternative for my already full hotmail inbox.

After a shaky start, Afrihost ROCKS!
They truly live up to the good things people have said about them, aswell as providing a great service for an affordable price.

Unlike other companies *cough* Cybersmart who charge different amounts for different speeds for the same cap. LOL!

LOL Michael, you're contradicting yourself here. Splitting your internet traffic into local vs international bandwith is the most stupid, useless and unnecessary complication I've ever heard of. It's called internet for a reason. The reason is to get rid of ****n national barriers, not to erect new ones. It is not called Afronet or SAfronet but Internet!!!

When I surf I visit sites with content that interests me. In 99% I don't know or even wanna know where the server for that site is located. It is somewhere in the internet, that's all I need to know. That's all anybody needs to know!

Don't you know SA is probably the only country worldwide where the system of splitting local/international bandwith has ever existed? It is nothing but a trick by the ISP's to charge you more for basically the same service.

Same with caps. 99% of internet users on the planet are uncapped, 90% of them are using not much more than 1 GB/month. So why make things friggin complicated by adding various controlling instances only to make your account cap-able? Again a simple answer: They do it so they can overcharge you! It's the SAfrican way I'm afraid.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Our plan will be to keep it as simple as we possibly can for our client. Simply connect, go anywhere, do anything and pay one monthly fee and forget about it.

I'd sincerely appreciate any further suggestions!

Hi BLaZor2

Accepted, however there are so many free and reliable local / international webmail offerings and considering the cost of local hosting (and the related services), it is bound to affect the final cost of including these types of services in the proposed uncapped offering.

Clarification: I am not suggesting that they should remove any of their free add-ons, of their current packages.

Hi HermanTheGerman

You are interpreting my suggestions in a way which I have not intended. (Emphasis on proposed services)

My apologies, let me clarify. I would prefer to engage with an ISP that does not merely route local traffic via the cheapest solution. (Keeping in mind the various local networks that are still under construction and LLU)

As for keeping it simple, an offering that provides you with an uncomplicated quick signup, that is affordable and stable.
Once the user’s CP is activated, the option to select an array of add-on services and configurations. (chargeable or free)

Ah fair enough. :)

Hi Gian,

Well, much as I would love 4mb uncapped with no limits, it is very unlikely to come in below the R999 I'm paying for Axxess Express Fibre 384k uncapped (at least for some time). The product I would like to see would have the following attributes:

Full 4Mb unshaped access (or up to line speed) during offpeak from 8pm to 8am Mondays to Friday, and over weekends. No Cap. (Just like Axxess Express)

Full 4Mb unshaped access (or up to line speed) peak 8am to 8pm Monday to Fridays; subject to a monthly cap, say 20GB, which applies only to bandwidth used during peak hours, after which traffic is throttled to 256kbps.

With a product like this, one can get all the benefits of fast 4mb uncapped but still have a fast, usable 4mb connection at peak times, eliminating the biggest drawback of the Express product (which is always throttled during peak hours). One just has to restrict heavy downloading during peak hours up to a specific limit.

Whereas at the moment I use 3 different ADSL accounts with complex cron jobs and scripting to achieve Nirvana, an account like the above would be the only one I would ever need.

And if you could bundle the above with 4mb ADSL line rental you could have that business as well.
